Travel Advice for Thailand

In the early 1980s the Thai economy suddenly burst into life and for over a decade Thailand posted some of the fastest economic growth in the developed world. High quality hotels, designed to appeal to western tourists, were built all over the country and as a result, Thailand is now one of the most popular tourist destinations in Asia.

The one major factor which has kept more people from visiting Thailand is the political situation. In recent months it came to a head with a prolonged period of violence in Bangkok. Since then the Foreign Office has slightly relaxed its travel warnings, but as the tourist trade recovers, there are still risks associated with travelling in Thailand.

A range of cheap flights to Bangkok has made it much easier for people to visit Thailand on a budget. However, saving money on things like accommodation makes western travellers a target for thieves and pickpockets.

Despite the economic growth, the average wage in Thailand remains relatively low and accordingly, theft is the most reported crime in Thailand. Whilst there are a large number of pick pockets there have also been reports of bags being snatched by passers by on motorbikes, so keep your wallet and passport close to your skin.

It''s particularly important to be careful if you''re going to buy anything. Credit card fraud is becoming increasingly sophisticated and the Foreign Office warns that you should never let your card out of your sight (or out of your hand if possible) even in shops. Travel cards with limited sums of money on them are a good idea.

Another thing that people should be wary of are demarcation lines between shops and stalls in market places. Taking the wares of one shop into another by accident may be regarded as an attempt at theft and therefore result in a fine or even a criminal charge.

One of the most popular destinations in Thailand is Phangan Island where the famous Full Moon party takes place. Tourists flock to the Full Moon party and so too do people looking to take advantage of them, so keep your wits about you and try to avoid travelling alone.

Thailand can be a dangerous place to visit, but it is also a wonderful destination and there are relatively few reports of incidents each year. The important thing is to be aware of the risks, but it shouldn''t be a cause for you to miss out on experiencing an amazing country.
