Who would want to work in a place where they would be needing to risk their lives everyday? It?s understandable that all jobs have some sort of risks to it, but employers of these jobs should still find a way to manage risks involve especially when it comes to workplace health. One of the most basic and fundamental of any workplace health practice is having it free from common workplace hazard. Workplace hazards vary from one working environment to another. Hazards can be classified as biological, chemical and mechanical.

Slips, falls, entanglement all fall into mechanical hazards in the workplace. Injuries arising from these can be both minor like bruises and cuts to more major medical concerns like broken bones and damaged organs and worst still even life threatening. Management can do a lot to minimize these workplace health risks if they are only serious about it.

Implementing programs don?t have to be expensive, putting up simple signs like caution and wet floor signs are enough for some accident prone areas. Elevated areas should never allow people to reach the ledge and be at risk of falling. Each and every single one of these workplace health measures to reduce risk and eventually eliminate it altogether.

Since there are countless combinations of chemicals, chemical hazards are harder to manage. Some chemicals are acidic while some are extremely volatile. The workplace health risks involved for any particular chemical is hard to determine without first knowing what exactly the chemical is and in what environment conditions it is in.

Since chemicals are far and wide as mentioned, the first thing to do to avert a workplace health catastrophe is to note down which chemicals are present and find a Material Safety Data Sheet for each one. Data on how to prevent and manage spills, how to handle the chemicals are all included in each chemical MSDS. Every possible staff that may be in danger of the chemical should at the least be notified and made aware of where the MSDS is stored for times of emergency.

Biological hazards such as viruses, bacteria and so on are probably the most difficult to manage in a workplace. And what?s even worst, biological workplace health hazards are everywhere and are not confined to one space. There?s no way to completely stop one virus or disease from going to another place as some more deadly and common sicknesses are airborne.

Proper education on correct sanitary habits is one of the easiest ways to prevent biological contaminants in affecting the workforce. Simple things like washing hands with soap, proper waste disposal, proper procedure for handling cuts, bruises and injuries and so forth can go a long way in managing these biological workplace health hazards. Employers should also make it a point to make sure employees take regular physical examinations to detect diseases early on.

Keeping the staff constantly educated of old and new risks in the workplace is extremely helpful to the company. Whether mechanical, chemical or biological, employees will be able to identify possible risks and prevent accidents from happening. Workplace health starts and ends with each and every one of us.
