Pretty well everyone thinks of New Year as the time to set some annual resolutions and start the year anew. Of course, we all realize that most resolutions are quickly forgotten. The good news is that now is always the best time to take charge of your future and create the life you've always wanted.

Real success is about understanding your priorities and following a plan that highlights the things that are most important to you. With that in mind, here are 10 tips for creating the life you've always wanted and making it happen in 2010.

1. Take the time to think about and decide what you really want this year. What would make 2010 the best year ever, for you? Dream, visualize and feel excited about the prospects the new year brings. Once you've got a mental picture of what you want in your mind, write it down in as much vivid detail as you can. This becomes your refocusing document during the year, when you start to lose sight of the big picture.

2. Commit to a venture you've dreamed of but haven't done. Learn a new language, write a book, visit some far off exotic destination, start a business, build a house. Stretch yourself.

3. Raise the level and increase your goals. Double what you expect of yourself, and then commit to making it happen. Even if you only accomplish half of what you set out to accomplish, you'll still do more than you would have otherwise.

4. Be kind to yourself and those close to you. Be gentle, patient and tolerant of others. And help the ones you love the most set and accomplish their own goals. There's nothing as satisfying as seeing someone you love be successful and happy.

5. Set aside one day each month, just for you. Use ink, not pencil, and schedule an appointment with yourself for one full day each month. Have fun and renew yourself. Every single month. No exceptions.

6. Take more vacation than you had planned, if you can afford it. Look at the calendar and write in a couple of extra weeks off. Relax and just do things you enjoy. Go camping, rent a cabin at the beach, visit old friends, or climb a mountain. Just do it.

7. Buy four books you've always wanted to read, and schedule time for them. Put it in your appointment calendar as continuing education or research, and enjoy.

8. Donate time each week to a cause or group that needs your help. Mentor a child, support the Red Cross, volunteer at your house of worship. Make a difference in someone else's life.

9. Renew relationships with family and friends. Every week, simply make a call or send an email, and re-connect with the people who have helped you along the way.

10. Make a point every single day to tell someone you appreciate them, that you are grateful for their help. Gratitude is the key to happiness and fulfillment.

You may be surprised by taking some time out to do the above, actually makes you happier and ultimately more successful. Remember, human beings are social creatures and we are the happiest when we are happy in our social environment. So help others, help yourself and watch the happy times roll in.
