2. Pick the right time of year to buy. New models tend to come in during autumn, around September to November. Now is when you can either grab the leftovers of last year at bargain prices or get launch discounts on the new models.

3. Pick the right time of the month to buy. Dealers have sales targets. Leave it until the end of the month to get them a little keener for your business.

4. Compare as many options as you can. Internet prices are usually less flexible than dealer prices, but are generally much lower. Shop around. Get written quotes where possible and use them to leverage your price haggling.

5. Car dealers are busier at weekends. Try to visit during the week when they will be much keener to get a sale.

6. If you don't know enough about cars, bring someone that does. At the worst pay an independent mechanic to come and have a look with you.
7. Read between the lines. If a dealer tells you that the engine, bodywork and suspension are all good, ask about the brakes and gearbox. What is he not telling you?

8. Take your time. There is no rush. There is a car that will suit you perfectly, it just might take a while to find it.

9. Test drive the car. Looks are deceiving with cars. A perfect exterior could mean nothing - maybe the car was not serviced often enough and the engine is tired. Similarly, a rusty wreck could be a diamond in the rough. (Have you ever seen Chitty Chitty Bang Bang?) If you brought a friend or mechanic with you, be sure to have them test drive the car as well.

10. Always be prepared to walk away from the deal if you feel something is not right. Even after a test drive you have no obligation to buy the car. In most cases, buying a car involves serious amounts of money. If you're being pushed into something you don't really want - walk away - it's your money!
