Tips for Great Interior Painting on the First Coat

Many people choose to repaint the interior of their home to give it an updated, fresh appearance. Painting a room is often a task that homeowners choose to tackle themselves without calling a professional. If you are one of those people that prefers to save money by completing home project do-it-yourself style then you are most certainly looking to save money and still have a professional quality job completed. With the right steps, you can accomplish great interior painting on the first coat.

The first step in painting the interior of your home is to make sure that you have the proper paint color to begin. Choose a color that compliments both you and the room. Keep in mind that the color of the paint can affect how big or small the area appears. Lighter colors tend to create the illusion of more space while darker colors make space look smaller. Also consider the trimming and door color choices.

Just as important as the color of the interior paint, is the finish of the paint. Discuss your room and needs with a paint specialist to determine if you need a flat, satin, or glossy form of finish.

Once the paint is purchased, you are ready to begin in the room. While many choose to simply buy the paint and start painting, they end up wasting time by not properly preparing the room. A well-prepared room can be painted faster and easier. To prepare a room for interior painting, begin by removing furniture or accessories from the painting area. Cover large furniture pieces and floors with old sheets or blankets. Ensure that you have adequate space to reach all areas of the wall.

To create faster work with an even, clean finish, always condition the walls for painting. If you plan to finish your work in one coat, the walls should be clean and read for paint. Wash the walls to free them of dirt and dust. Fill in any cracks or holes created by pictures of other wall hangings. Make sure that the trim snuggly meets the wall. Use caulk on nay needed areas. Choose a sealer or primer for water stains and darkened areas.

After the room is prepared, it is time to begin the actual paint work. Before dipping in and splashing paint on the walls, consider the tool that will work best for the area. Larger areas are more evenly covered with a roller brush while trim work will require a paint brush. Properly housing your unused paint while you work is also important. Do not allow the paint to sit open and stiffen. Periodically mix your paint to ensure that the color is even throughout the room. If you need to temporarily stop using the roller, wrap it up in a plastic bag to hold moisture in it. This will save time over washing it and prevent it from becoming stiff and scraping the walls.

When painting the interior of your room, it is best to always begin at the top and work your way down to the floor. If possible, paint a whole wall before stopping. This will prevent the edges of the roller marks from drying so the strokes will be well blended. Take a break after each wall if necessary.
