Smoke pretty much consists of the oily residue and particles left by ash and soot. Even the tiniest fire leave smells inside the house that can make the house impossible to live in until the total removal of the smell.

In most homes one can find things that are not be damaged by the fire, but still can absorb the smell or attract the soot and collect their ash on their surfaces, leaving a light film. Clothing for ezample, is easy to wash it in order to remove the smell, but before washing, see the instructions on the label of the cloth and wash it accordingly to the manufactuerers reccomendations. Soft toys or similar things can also be washed on a gently cycle in the washing machine.

For cleaning walls and hard surfaces you can use the TSP (disodium phosphate cleaner). Mix up a tablespoon of TSP with a gallon of water and use it to wash natural wood or painted surfaces. If you wash the wood make sure that it's allowed to dry completely and then polish it with special furniture polish made from beeswax to restore the former sheen.

Normally when you start cleaning the soot, it tends to puff. So if you have loose carpets and rugs, take them out before you cover the floor with plastic sheeting. When you start cleaning, start from the top or from the ceiling and gradually move down the walls. In intervals shake the sheets in order to remove the collected soot and ash. If you are cleaning one thing, try also to completely clean it including all the hard to reach places before you start cleaning another item. Some items will need only fresh air to be refreshed and get rid of the fire smell.

If the damage after the fire is really significant usually the deep water drenching is an obsolete necessity to remove the smell. But it can lead to water damages in addition to the smoke damage. For example laminated flooring doesn't like stand up well to a lot of water, so if after the fire there are some areas of the floor that need to be replaced to restore the flooring, if you try to saturate the floor with water in order to remove the smell, you can destroy the entire laminated floor. So be careful of what you do and for the best results consult a professional Janitorial or floor restoration company.

There is a problem for paper items that have survived after the fire, because are still damaged due to the smoke they absorbed. Specialized companies have professional liquids that kill any smell of the paper. Files and photos can be refreshed by the natural outside air, but you better before doing any of the above, consult the local janitorial or cleaning company.
