Timeshare Presentation Tactics

Timeshare presentation tragedies are numerous and varied. The desire to enjoy a cheaper or discounted travel vacation can become a disappointing experience. Below is a retelling of a particular negative experience. It may ready or prevent readers from going through them.

The Invite
A couple gets an invite to attend a timeshare presentation. The invitations are given through networks, email, or traditional mail. Each invitation politely requests mail recipients to take a chance at winning free vacations or items and/or getting cheap getaways. All it asks in return is to sit through a 90-minute presentation and listen. A telemarketer once offered a "discounted" ($119) 3 day/2 night stay in exchange for attending a presentation of Coral Reef Resort in Hilton Head. When you think about it, it is a good deal.

The First Impression
The first impression is always positive. Presentation venues are always presentable and charming. The location is targeted at uplifting the mood. The ambience is friendly and comfortable. Drinks and some food are readily available. The venue is littered with smartly dressed, friendly, and seemingly polite people. These are people eager to help assist and please.

Politely, a salesperson collects information. Simple questions are asked and a light mood cultivated. The couple is relaxed and is eager for the presentation.

The Switch
But the façade is torn down. This is the part when people start selling and pressuring the participants to buy.

The couple starts to insist in starting the presentation in order to follow the 90-minute length. The salesperson leaves and is replaced by another. The couple explains that they have owned a timeshare before and are actually pleased with it. But they insist they won’t purchase more but would want to finish the presentation.

They are surprised that the salesperson leaves them after saying that, “Your presentation is for 90 minutes. You can sit there.” and never returns.

A sudden realization is achieved - there is only one point in a timeshare presentation. It is not free stuff or vacations. It is not the discounted and bargain getaways. It is and always was – the pursuit of money.

As always, various selling tactics are utilized. Person upon person is shuffled and sometimes combined to insist on a sale. Suave talking and persuasive sellers throw every selling trick in the book. Polite becomes impolite to force sales. Promises are crammed to better give an effect in savings or bargain.

Pressure selling is the coup de grace of the presentation. Pressure selling by using time and this is designed to break down the defenses—buy now or be treated impolitely by salespeople. In this particular case, impoliteness was shown to the non-buying couple.

And above it all, if you walk out of the presentation – be careful. Be wary of incoming charges from an unfinished presentation. One retelling claims that Hilton Head Welcome Center charged $230 for an unfinished presentation. They charged a full night’s stay when in fact a room a night was only $70.

It would be unfair to generalize. But isn’t it grossly unfair to not share and allow others to suffer through unsatisfying timeshare presentations?
