In this information crazy, social media frenzied world that we live in, it is becoming increasingly necessary for companies and individuals to protect their online reputations.

Here are 3 things that you can do to protect yourself from overzealous individuals who do not care about the harm they do to others online. They want to prop themselves up by tearing others down. It's not really their fault; they've been programmed that way.

1. Be offensive instead of defensive. A good offence that you can take online is to publish your own positive content about you and your company. For example; post positive testimonials and reviews about your products and services so that people who seek information can find the positive stuff before they find any negative.

Once you've posted your content make sure that you promote it through social media channels. This will help your search engine rankings because Google likes to see back links to your online content.

Do you keyword research so that you choose negative keyword phrases such as "your company scam" or "your company fraud." This will also help in your search rankings. Remember, people will appreciate your candor if you be honest with them in telling them that you are managing your online reputation in your articles.

2. Rebut any online negative comments when possible. If you find anything negative online make sure that you comment on it directly. If it's in blog format this should be easy to do.

However, if the negative comments are in a website that you cannot comment on then you must email or communicate with the writer somehow to voice your concerns. Doing nothing is not an option.

3. Hire an online reputation management company. If you have a serious problem with your online reputation and much has been written in a negative fashion, you may have to take matters a lot more seriously.

People tend to believe the negative stuff before they'll believe the good stuff. It's the way people have been programmed. Therefore, you'll have to push the negative stuff away from view.

That often means getting the negative stuff off of the front page of a search engine like Google and that takes a serious amount of time, energy and knowledge. There are a few companies out there that can do this for you. It is expensive, yes. However, you get what you pay for.

Thank of all the business you will be losing as a result of the negative things that people write on the internet then, factor that into your decision as to whether or not your should take this type of action.

I recently came across a company who had a huge online reputation problem because of a well publicized lawsuit. In my estimation this is costing that company millions of dollars a year in lost revenue.

As your company grows and becomes more in the public eye you will need to manage your reputation online sooner or later. My suggestion is you do it sooner. If you don't, you may wake up one day to find out you're on the front page of Google for something negative. That's bad, period.
