Everyone knows the feeling. You wake up feeling groggy and wooly-headed. You KNOW you shouldn’t have had that last drink (or three!), but it was New Years Eve and you were having such a good time…….

So you search in the medicine cupboards, nursing your head so it doesn’t wobble too much, but there are no paracetamol or Nurofen, or aspirin, in fact nothing that will help you. What do you do?

Well first of all, while you are at the cupboard, check to see if you have any vitamin tablets around, if so take some, and specifically try to find some Vitamin C. Alcohol can seriously deplete your Vitamin C levels and they need building back up again. Vitamins B & A will probably need a little top-up too if it’s been a heavy night.

Next you have to listen to your body. To start with it will be craving liquids. Dehydration through alcohol is the primary cause of hangover headaches. Put the kettle on. While you are waiting have a look in the fridge for a fizzy drink, preferably Cola as it has a bit of caffeine to give you a boost as well as the liquid content, even the bubbles can help with the nausea.

If no Cola, then look for some pure orange or tomato juice, these are also high in Vitamin C and can quickly get your metabolism going again.

Ok, the kettles boiled. Get a strong coffee for the extra caffeine, and stick the toaster on for a bit of something in your stomach. You may not feel like eating but your body will need something to mop up the extra toxins left in the body. It is best to eat it dry if the nausea is at a high level, and you don’t want to irritate it.

Another brilliant remedy is a banana. These are rich in potassium, and having suffered from low levels myself recently i can tell you that you will feel bad all day if you don’t get your potassium levels up. It needs topping up every day anyway, but if you’ve been dehydrated and visiting the toilet a lot, potassium will have leaked out wholesale. Get that banana down you.

If you have done all that, and managed to keep it all in your stomach long enough to do it some good, you should be on your way to recovery. If you are lucky enough to have the day off from work, you will probably need to lie down again.

Maybe the most relaxing thing would be a nice hot bath. Lie Back with your eyes shut and let your body recover. If your bathroom has a bright light, turn it off and light a candle to give your eyes a rest. Keep a pint of water beside you and keep taking gulps to replace all that lost liquid, and by the time the water has cooled down you should be right as rain and ready to face the world again!
