The mile high club

The twentieth century has been a travelling one. From the high-speed train, to the rise and rise of the automobile to the concorde, we seem to have a hunger for speed. And for many, flying is the ultimate thrill. There''s always one passionate flyer in every family, who counts down the days to the trip, enjoys the ''food'' they get served on the plane. They get to the airport and just want to speed through as quickly as possible.

Then there is another kind of traveler ? the airport traveler, shall we call them. These individuals are perhaps less enamoured of the flying experience, but the airport experience suits them just fine. They check in early and allow themselves plenty of time to settle into the departures lounge, almost to the point of forgetting a flight is about to set off without them.

Who would have thought that the twenty-first century would be the era in which stations, airports ''passing through'' places themselves can become attractions? Indeed, until 2007 Britain''s busiest airport, Heathrow, had its own visitors centre, open since 1995 offering tours and histories of the airplane and air travel in Britain.

Perhaps airport tourism was never a great idea - today the building is a conference and facilities centre ? yet this hasn''t stopped the consumer expansion of Heathrow in other respects. The BAA is trying to find a way to keep people spending money all the way to Heathrow Terminal 5 and back.

Whilst the new terminal and the ongoing development at the airport have been controversial with politicians, locals and environmental campaigners alike, this has not stopped the airport rapidly transforming itself into an out-of-town department store.

Heathrow has cleverly struck up deals with innumerable big brands and London attractions so that Harrods and Burberry now sell their wares at reductions on their inner-city prices. Duty-free designer brands, posh chocolates and sunglasses gleam at the arriving and departing passengers. One wonders why international visitors go into London at all when Harrods is now encamped at the airport!
