"The luxuries and conveniences of contemporary life" consist in making clever use of things and receiving help from other individuals, which were, in the past, praiseworthy. In modern times, however, instead of being healthy practice, they have proved harmful because they "prevent people from developing into truly strong and independent individuals. "

To utilize things used to be a marvelous deed, and people who perform such deed were generally held as wise and important. The wind and river water were thus used to help the humans do useful work, wild plants and fruits were discovered as useful for feeding our mouths or curing our diseases, and animals were trained to be our companions or workers. Owing to this brilliant utilization, the human race became much stronger and more independent than their primitive ancestors, and finally prevailed on this planet Earth. We never find out who first discovered and made use of these, but we are so proud of them and worship them so much that each nation has been claiming that it is their ancestors that first performed those marvelous deeds.

That is not the case in modern times, however. We have been using such things, and in such manners, that now we call them "luxuries and conveniences of contemporary life. " We use on our desk an object the size of a small box, and therefore don't have to use our legs to walk to the shop to do shopping. We use an enormous object called "elevator," fixed in every building, so that we can get upstairs, again without using our legs. And that marvelous thing we call "car" is going to cause an increasingly larger number of people to stop using their legs in such a way that the human legs are going to be two sticks sticking to the body as luxurious decoration, like fashion trousers. Modern people realize what a great loss they have caused to themselves, usually when it is too late, in moments of a fire or earthquake. Then being burned to death or crashed to bits is part of the cost. But some of those who survive these disasters may know what the matter is: " the luxuries and conveniences of contemporary life" have helped prevent people from developing into truly strong individuals.

Similarly, to be dependent used to be no vice, and to help other people a virtue. They helped, in primitive times, the weak individuals form into stronger bodies of men (armies, nations, etc. ) so as to tackle natural forces that would be overpowering when tackled by isolated individuals. Nevertheless, in contemporary times they are no longer healthy and have stopped to be a virtue. Fathers have traditionally been confused about what their children need. However, in cases where our great grandfathers answered " a good beating is what they need," modern fathers visit the expert of education, asking him to tell them about their own children. And many elderly, wealthy, and important people visit the "psychological center," consulting a woman twenty years younger about whether they are out of their minds...

In the past, help was given by the abler, wiser and better-off people, to those who were really dependent: the less able, less wise and worse-off on their way to becoming independent. Nowadays, help is given without such distinction: we give help to other individuals so as to make a living, and such help is welcome because we can afford it. When help is given so randomly, far from causing people to become independent, it functions to help people become increasingly less independent.

These bad consequences is a sign that, in the course of that great human progress called "civilization," we humans have been going to extremes. Let's look into the problem before it is not too late.
