If you are in the market for a new laptop then how about considering a netbook? The top 10 netbooks now being sold offer a performance that is one a par with their larger cousins. Though we may have different demands and expectations when it comes to choosing a computer, there is a general consensus as to what are the best processors, graphics chips, and display resolutions. Though the price of netbooks has dropped considerably since they were first introduced, it is still essential to do some amount of research before you spend your money.

To start with let's consider the display resolution and screen size. Netbooks are more compact and portable than an average laptop; their screens typically are in the range between seven and twelve inches. Which would be best for you will depend on your exact needs. What would you be using the netbook for most of the time, word processing, general computing, or browsing the net? A larger screen size would provide you with a better display resolution.

The ergonomics of the keyboard is also an important factor. Most would feature keyboards that are around ninety per cent of the size found on a normal PC. The actual layout of keys will vary depending on the model and manufacturer. The touchpad is another important design aspect. How easy is it to use the touchpad? There has been a lot of advancements in the design of touch pads over the last couple of years.

The operating system will also be a factor when deciding which netbook to buy. There are netbooks available that use either Linux or Windows operating systems. The tasks that you will be doing everyday via your netbook will determine which type of OS would be best. If you are familiar with Windows then you could consider a netbook that uses the new Windows 7 operating system, though if you are after the best performance it is recommended to try out a Linux based netbook.

Almost all netbooks make use of Intel atom processors. Though slower than what is found on the larger laptops the atom chip is still more than acceptable. The latest version is the N450, always try to get a netbook that has the most up to date processor.

The netbook will not respond as desired to commands if the Ram and storage capacity are under par. Though 1GB of Ram is usually sufficient it would make more sense to choose a netbook that has at least 2GB. This would ensure that is capable of performing well even if your demands increase.
A problem that was common with netbooks up until the last two years was the battery life. There is nothing more frustrating then having the battery die at the most inopportune moment. There are new netbooks that can offer as much as ten hours of battery life. In part this will be determined by the type of processor. The Atom N450 is believed to consume twenty per cent less power than the previous generation of processors.

So what would be the best netbooks to consider? The following shortlist includes models that have consistently received high accolades and great reviews. After analysing the above criteria the best options to shortlist include the Asus eee pc 1201n, Asus 1001p mu17, Toshiba mini nb305 n310, Acer aspire one 532h 2326, Gateway lt2118u, Acer ao532h 2223, Gateway lt2120u, HP mini 5102, Lenovo thinkpad x100e, and the Lenovo ideapad s10-3.
