Vegetarians

While whole grains and vegetables do a fabulous job of augmenting protein levels for vegetarians, they do not have the quality and quantity of protein to stand on their own at a meal. The Simply Bar offers the quality and quantity of protein and minerals needed to be viewed as a standalone meat alternative.

Travel snack: One of the challenges for vegetarians and other health-conscious individuals is to find good quality protein while traveling. The Simply Bar is a perfect on-the-go snack as it is packed with protein: you fi ll up on protein, not on fat and sugar. In each bar, there is 16 to 18 grams of whole soy protein. Soy is ideal as it is a complete protein containing all 8 essential amino acids, which is rare for vegetarian protein. The Simply Bar is portable and convenient.

Non-GMO soy: We also use organic ingredients where possible because we care about how and where our food is grown! We pay a premium to ensure that the soy protein we use is non-genetically modified; Did you know less than 10% of the soy in North America is currently non-GMO?!

Cruelty-free: You can also rest assured that The Simply Bar is cruelty-free and guaranteed to be free of the antibiotics and hormones found in animal-based proteins.

Iron-rich: Vegetarians need 50% more dietary iron because it comes from non-heme iron sources. And it is best if consumed with a Vitamin C rich food to increase iron absorption. Enjoy your Simply bar with an orange, kiwi or Kale chips to improve iron absorption.

Digestion With Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) there is no physical damage to the gut and watching what you eat can make a huge difference in symptoms. The following are some general tips that may help you manage gas, bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea and / or constipation:

Avoid food triggers – the foods that upset your system. These differ from person to person, but dairy products, “sugar-free” foods, and caffeine are three of the key triggers.

The most common food trigger is dairy. Lactose isn’t the only culprit – for many people the proteins in milk, whey and casein, can cause digestive upset.

• The Simply Bar is made in a dairy-free facility and thebars contain no milk products.

Avoid sugar alcohols. These are designed so that the body cannot absorb them, making them low calorie. However, they are also known to cause digestive distress because bacteria give off gas as they ferment them. Sugar alcohols include Sorbitol, Maltitol, and Xylitol – all the “ols” and glycerine.

• These are found in most protein bars. You can often detect them by a funny aftertaste. The Simply Bar is sweetened with agave and brown rice syrup – easy to absorb and natural sweeteners. Caffeine stimulates peristalsis, or waves of action in the gut. If you are sensitive to caffeine, avoid the Cocoa Coffee Simply Bar, which contains a small amount of caffeine.

Digestion (continued)

Eat small, frequent meals. Large meals can cause pain, bloating
and diarrhea.

The Simply Bar is 40 grams or less and always under 16 calories – a perfect small meal / snack.

Reduce your fat consumption. Besides the numerous health problems associated with consuming excess fat, it also slows digestion which can lead to bloating.

The Simply Bar has only 2 to 3 grams of fat. It is, by far, the lowest fat protein bar available. Limit consumption of simple carbohydrates / sugars. The Simply Bar has only 9 to 12 grams of simple sugars per bar, which come from low glycemic plant sources

A note about chocolate: Many people find they have trouble with chocolate, but it is the sugar and milk that is the issue, not the cocoa. Pure cocoa is actually used in many countries to treat diarrhea. Cocoa also contains high amounts of flavonoids, which have been shown to have beneficial effects on heart health. We use organic cocoa in our bars. Compare this to other protein bars which list the ingredients in their cocoa as sugar, milk, soy lecithin, and cocoa liquor.

Weight loss

Weight loss is not easy; many people find it easy to eat well in the
morning but by mid afternoon, they feel tired and hungry. The temptation is to grab a large calorie laden “snack” (think donuts and cookies). The issue is that this snack throws off your good eating and ruins your dinner. Furthermore, high sugar snacks will give you a burst of energy but will be followed by a crash.

The Simply Bar is a tasty, convenient treat that satisfies and fills you up (with 16-18 grams of protein per bar), won’t spike your blood sugar\ levels (because it has a low glycemic index), and provides only 160 calories (or less) and 3 grams of fat (or less), so it can be incorporated into any diet. It is especially fi tting for a post workout snack!

Pregnancy

Nausea is a normal and common side-effect of pregnancy. “To help relieve this fi rst trimester pregnancy symptom, eat small, frequent meals throughout the day. Choose foods that are low in
fat and easy to digest.” – Mayo Clinic.

Easily digested. The Simply Bar was designed by a gastroenterologist so that even people with compromised digestion (like those with Crohn’s and colitis) can easily digest them. Some pregnant women suffer from acid reflux later in their pregnancy as the baby gets bigger and takes up more space, affecting digestion. This easy-to-digest bar is a great snack for pregnant women. The Simply Bar is very low in fat, with only 2-3 grams per bar. Small meal. Each bar is 40 grams or less and under 160 calories.

Protein needs increase during pregnancy to develop new cells and support each stage of the baby’s growth process. Each Simply Bar has 16-18 grams of protein.

Gestational diabetes can also develop during pregnancy. Eating low glycemic foods will help prevent blood sugar spikes. Simple carbohydrates and sugars cause an endless cycle of craving more quick sugars, getting a quick blood sugar spike, and then dipping lower as too much insulin is demanded by your system.

High fiber foods and protein are digested more slowly, keeping your blood sugar stable. Look for our Lemon Coconut and Peanut Butter Cocoa bars, which are low glycemic.

Iron. The requirement for iron during pregnancy is twice the amount prior to pregnancy. The Simply Bar provides iron. Eat it with a Vitamin C rich fruit or vegetable to further improve iron absorption.

Celiac and Gluten Sensitivities

Manufacturers of foods intended for those with Celiac disease have traditionally only addressed one component of the issue – being gluten-free. Unfortunately, many of these foods are produced with white rice, potato fl our, and tapioca starch – ingredients with many calories while providing little or no nutritional value. The Simply Bar is unique in that it offers great protein without all the sugar and refi ned carbohydrates.

Gluten in additives: Many food additives contain gluten, and foods can have trace amounts of gluten if processed on shared machinery with other products. The Simply Bar is additive free, and our manufacturing process guarantees a gluten-free environment.

Gluten & milk intolerance: There still needs to be research in this area, but scientists have noticed a link between gluten intolerance and milk intolerance. A study in 1986 by Volta and colleagues showed that up to half of Celiacs tested were also intolerant of milk protein. For these people – often with ongoing digestive issues despite following a strict GF diet – going dairy free can be of help. The Simply Bar is both gluten and dairy free.

Celiac and weight gain: Many people with Celiac Disease start gaining
excess weight once they have adopted a gluten-free lifestyle and reversed the gut damage. Many gluten-free foods such as baked goods have 50% to 100% more calories than a comparable gluten containing food of the same size. When Celiacs replace 2 slices in a sandwich for 2 slices of gluten-free bread, their eyes tell them they are eating the same as the past, when in fact the actual calories are too much. It means changing your way of eating. Consider a poached egg on whole grain polenta rather than gluten-free toast. Consider a Simply Bar for a convenient, portable and tasty snack that satisfies rather than more typical gluten-containing snacks such as
granola bars, muffins and breads.

Athletes

Balanced protein. Athletes depend on protein to build and repair
muscles and tissues. The Simply Bar packs a healthy dose of 16
to 18 grams of protein per bar.

Easy to digest. Especially for Ironman athletes or marathoners, easy-to-digest protein is key for staying fueled for long events and training sessions. The Simply Bar’s combination of high-quality protein and slow release sugars make it easy to digest unlike heavier bars that require an increased blood supply to the gut. Thus the Simply Bar is an excellent snack before or during your training and races, as it will not cause cramping mid-race.

Iron stores. Athletes, especially female runners, require extra iron for strong athletic performance. Iron deficiency can lead to chronic fatigue, increased infections (iron helps maintain your immune system), and compromised endurance.

The Simply Bar is a great source of protein that also delivers iron. Convenience and Timing. Athletes post-workout snacks require protein and carbohydrate within 15-30 minutes of finishing a workout for optimal recovery. It is hard to find a convenient source of protein for your gym-bag that stays fresh and safe to eat at all temperatures and Simply Bars do. They don’t freeze in winter or melt in summer like chocolate covered bars. Add 2-3 pieces of fruit or 1-1.5 cups of juice to a Simply Bar for a perfect recovery meal after a good workout.
