Khmer Rouge also known Cambodia's Communist Party of Kampuchea (CPK), was formed from way back 1940's. The formation was caused by the struggle of Cambodians against the colonization of France and was inspired by Vietnam.

The Indochina War had fueled the growth of Khmer Rouge and, for the next 20 years, its foundation had become stronger. The existence of Khmer Rouge and its leaders known as "Angkar Pedavat" was kept secret after it finally exposed itself on 1977. Khmer Rouge had taken control of Cambodia since 1975 and had already built and led the Democratic Kampuchea from 1976 to January 1979.

The Khmer Rouge was formed so that it would transform Cambodia into a rural and classless society. There should be no rich and poor people. There should be no room for any exploitation. To accomplish this transformation, the leaders of Khmer Rouge removed the money system, free markets, rights to own properties, regular and normal schooling, foreign-inspired clothing and lifestyle, religion, and the established Khmer culture.

Churches and mosques, public schools and universities, pagodas, and business and government establishments were closed down or became prisons, granaries, stables and re-education camps. Any kind of transportation was shut down and any non-revolutionary entertainment was banned. The people, especially the leaders, were expected to always wear the traditional revolutionary clothes which are the black costumes.

Under the regime of Khmer Rouge, policies which ignored the importance of human life and human rights were created and implemented. These policies caused the oppression and mass murders of innocent Cambodians. Cambodia became a detention center of its own citizens and a graveyard of almost two million human beings.

Human rights were forgotten. People were only limited to move around their respective cooperative. Group discussion of only three people could result to arrest and execution.

Even human relationships were restricted. Showing affection, empathy or humor to someone else was not allowed. The Khmer Rouge forced the people to only respect and obey the Angkar Padevat--- the father and mother of all.

The Khmer Rouge arrested and murdered thousands of military officers, civil servants and soldiers who were part of the Khmer Republic under the leadership of Marshal Lon Nol. In the next three years, hundred thousand people who were city residents, intellectuals and minority people such as the Chinese, Vietnamese and Cham were killed. Most of these victims were Khmer Rouge's own soldiers and members who were charged as traitors. A lot of people became prisoners. They were kept in custody, tortured and killed.

Khmer Rouge was formed to its radical policies based on the Maoist and Marxist-Leninist revolution program. The result was the lost of millions of lives because of hunger, meaningless executions and battles, and overwork. Most of those who survived were gravely traumatized by their horrifying experiences.
