The city of Perth is the capital and the largest city in the state of Western Australia. It is quite a distance off the beaten track in Australia, far off from Adelaide, Darwin, Melbourne and Sydney. The state government is now undertaking a large scale public works project that would help ease the travel by rail or motorway to the city.

The city is located on the banks of the Swan River. Perth has become known as the “City of Lights” when the city opened all its lights when Friendship 7 passed over the city last February 1962. Again, this city activity was repeated when the Space Shuttle passed overhead in 1998.

One of the best streets in the city is St George Terraces providing one of the largest office spaces available in the Central Business District. Many of the retail and entertainment facilities of the city are located on Hay and Murray Streets. Many of these developments have been fueled by the mining business. From the commercial successes of the city, many of the commercial and residential projects catering to the increasing demand brought forth by the economic prosperity of the city.

The cost of living in Perth is very much the same as the other cities in Australia. One of the first things to learn is the ten percent tax on goods and services on top of the listed price for store bought items. It may seem that this is worth a lot but there are many bargain shopping centers throughout the city. One of the best ones is Harbour Town with its many factory outlets and bargain centers. There are many shops that offer Broome pearls, Argyle diamonds and Perth mint gold. There are also two Woolworth stores in the city that can cater to your medicinal needs.

When you have money to spend, King Street is the place to be with high end stores such as Louis Vuitton and Gucci. The north end of the street has many local boutiques that provide top notch goods at very reasonable prices. There are also many malls that provide household items from appliances to clothes for the everyday shopper. Shoppers can also take their pick from malls located in the suburbs. One of these many malls is Northbridge where clothing lines for hip clients are available off the rack.

There is but one problem when moving to Perth as there is not much of a social life available in the city. After ten pm, many of the eateries and the restaurants are closed, except for some holes in the wall way up in the Northbridge area. At an earlier time though, Northbridge has many restaurants that offer Continental, European as well as Asian cuisines. Aside from the formal places, there are many other stalls, stores as well as take away outlets for the many hungry diners. Another good place to dine and unwind is Fremantle where there are many seafood restaurants catering the finest of local Australian cuisine.

In moving to Perth, there are many good things to look forward to once you have settled down. AustraliaForum captures the sentiment on moving to Perth in a post saying, “There are many opportunities in the city, not just for employment but also for social as well as cultural advancement.” Once you have obtained your visa, you might as well see the best of Perth for yourself.
