Cars are not toys and the people that own cars shouldn't treat them as such. It is the responsibility of the person who owns a car to ensure that whoever drives their car does so in the safest possible way. The consequences of having an accident while driving are dire and, unfortunately, accidents are all too common. There are severe penalties in place for those who endanger both themselves and others by ignoring road safety regulations.

Not only can the driver, his or her loved ones, and other people be hurt or killed, there are also severe criminal and civil consequences for those who cause car accidents. One of these consequences is the loss or suspension of driving privileges. If a driver depends on his car to get to and from work or drives professionally, the loss of a license could place him in a dire financial position. This is coupled with the fact that the driver will be dealing with a possible court case as well.

High fines and possible jail sentences, relating not only to the accident itself but also to driving with a suspended or revoked license, are further negative consequences of irresponsible driving. Being found guilty of an auto-related misdemeanor or felony would also give a person a permanent criminal record not to mention cause their insurance premiums to go through the roof. It is therefore extremely important that anyone who has caused an auto-accident, or who has been accused of violating road safety, immediately retain a competent lawyer. Traffic laws in Illinois have recently introduced stricter DUI penalties and anyone accused of a DUI should waste no time in contacting either a criminal attorney or a DUI lawyer.

Not only can good representation help a driver win his case, a competent and aggressive lawyer can also challenge both license suspension and license revocation. In the case of a suspended license, a lawyer could help a driver by either getting the suspension period reduced or by having the suspension dismissed. In the case of a revoked license, on the other hand, a lawyer could apply for the driver to have partial use of the license. Two valid reasons for partial use would be if the driver cannot get to and from work without driving himself, and if the driver needs a license during working hours to earn a living.

Typical traffic violations, apart from the DUI, include such things as running red lights, speeding, speeding in a school or construction zone, and improper passing. Drivers also often find themselves accused of driving too fast for the prevailing conditions, reckless driving (including passing school buses), and causing an accident by either failing to stop or failing to yield. As far as DUIs are concerned, the official definition is "a traffic citation issued to a person accused of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs." It is imperative that all drivers behave responsibly and observe the rules of the road but accidents do happen and, when they do, it is important to retain excellent representation.
