The New PS Move

Gaming systems everywhere were revolutionized by the advent of the Wii, creating games that are more interactive. Rather than only slouching on the divan and using only your hands you could play games and move around too. It takes increased control in order to be successfull at these games; just like it does in real sports. Nintendo Wii made huge profits off their system and individuals it continues to sell well.

Perhaps in an attempt to keep up, Sony has now unveiled the PlayStation Move. It was revealed during the Game Developers Conference in California. The remote is like a microphone but it has an LED inside. Sony announced the motion-sensitive controller in an attempt to supercharge their sales and hopefully help themselves to at least some of the profits Wii is presently getting. Sony revealed their device and is planning to sell it before Microsoft enters the ring with their Project Natal controller system that some believe will rapidly take over this niche of the gaming industry.

The Move will be on store shelves this fall in a starter kit that may be obtained for less than one hundred dollars. This package contains the Move, a Playstation eye camera and a game. Obviously, it is not too pricey and is expected to sell well unless people choose to hold off to purchase the Natal instead.

Meanwhile, Sony's president for worldwide studios Shuehei Yoshida explained that Move will "exhibit that the motion controller for PS3 will be the solution for both infrequent and serious gamers alike" and the different types of games Sony can create are "incredibly varied." Some of the games that will be available include swords, bows and arrows, guns, punching and more.

It seems like it will be awesome but the truth is it looks a lot like the Wii remote except for the ludicrous ping pong ball on top that lights up to a shade of blue, pink, yellow, or green. It looks kinda wimpy, but my main worry is if it is not very sturdy. By the looks of it, a child could easily grab it and break it.

For myself I am a trifle disappointed that Move isn't more innovative. It seems like they just mimicked Wii. It is a general expectation for products to improve over time, but this doesn't seem to be that much more impressive. Especially since Microsoft is working on their Natal. There's a cool looking product! Everyone just hopes it will work as well as expected?

Microsoft is famed for coming in last in terms of innovation but really good when taking someone else's concept and improving it. So Natal looks exceptional; the idea that gamers don't need paddles and it can just detect your actions is truly neat. But how skillfully the designers will actually be able to construct that device is in question.

As an example how extensive will the range be and will the system be able to distinguish the actions as well as the separate players very well? It just seems like a very complex set-up and it isn't clear whether or not it will live up to marketing claims. But even if it doesn't work extremely well you can always wait for the new and improved second version that has all the kinks worked out. That will probably be what a lot of us do.
