A male supreme ruler of a kingdom is the king while a female supreme ruler is the queen. But a queen can also be the wife of a king. A male supreme ruler of an empire is the emperor while a female supreme ruler is the empress. But an empress can also be the wife of an emperor. A king or an emperor is not elected, but is born into a royal family. The emperor of Japan is called Mikado.

A crown is a circle made of gold and decorated with precious jewels, worn by a king and queen, or an emperor and empress on their heads in an official ceremony. So a crown is a sign or symbol of royal power. If a man is crowned, he has a crown placed on his head at a special ceremony and is given the power and status of king or emperor.
