The Lactobacillus Is The Best Probiotic

First, the term probiotic is derived from the Latin words pro; for, and bios; life. Probiotic is thus 'for life', or more specifically bacterial life. It should not be associated with anti-biotics, its contradiction, because antibiotics actually kill bacterial life, including probiotic bacteria. Nor should probiotics be confused with pre-biotics; carbohydrates that are not digestible and supposed to promote the development and growth of good bacteria in the digestive system.

The essential function of probiotics is to promote the presence of beneficial bacteria in the human digestive system. As we all know, our stomach and intestines contain billions of bacteria to help the digestive enzymes convert the food into nutrients for absorption into the body and give us life. About 15% of the bacteria volume should be beneficial bacteria to ensure correct food digestion. It is quite impossible to eliminate 'bad' bacteria in the system, but if there are enough 'good' bacteria the digestive process will function as it is supposed to. Probiotic supplements can help assure that we achieve this balance.

There are about 13 strains of the Lactobacilli bacteria family (there are around 125 Lactobacillus species) that fall under the term probiotics, accepted as essential for good digestion. These bacteria all produce lactic acid (hence the name) to modify the pH balance of the large intestine, making it hostile to 'bad' bacteria, yeast and molds. Thus it greatly helps to control the yeast Candida which is notorious for its severe ill effects on the body. Probiotics also inhibit the growth of the bacteria that putrefy food in the stomach that may cause harm and create inordinately foul smell in the wind we pass.

Additionally, the formation of lactic acid is also believed to help prevent colon cancer, reduce cholesterol, lower blood pressure, promote immune functions, improve absorption of minerals and render other beneficial effects, in varying degrees of effectivity. Discoveries about people who have milk in their regular diets indicate that their exceptionally long lives may be because of the milk fermented with lactic acid.

But they are not without ill effects. Previous studies in The Netherlands established that probiotics may be harmful to patients with acute pancreatitis. In Australia, experiments on children given probiotics or placebo concluded that those given probiotics were more prone to allergens than the other group. People with reduced immune capabilities may suffer Lactobacillus septicaemia, a potentially deadly affliction caused by intake of probiotics.

Although generally held to be beneficial to the body and vital for health, there are no established daily volumes of probiotics substances for ingestion. Perhaps because they occur naturally in the intestines and digestive tract and no research as to the correct volumes have been made so far.

Most fermented foods such as sausages or sauerkraut may also have probiotics. However, the amount of organisms may differ among products due to variations in processing methods. Probiotics colonize and remain in the intestines indefinitely until eliminated by antibiotics or other methods. Although probiotics bacteria can be found in food products like yogurt, probiotics may be supplemented in powder, tablet, liquid or capsule forms. There are many probiotics supplements available on the market today each with different specific qualities.

It is important when buying these supplements to find the best probiotics product. These are normally those containing the lactobacilli genus. Additionally, it is important to make sure the supplement you buy contains enough of the bacteria per serving. Many of these products have been found not to contain the required amount of probiotics to have a noticeable difference. To find out more, follow the links I have provided bellow.
