The Hypocrisy Behind State Gambling Monopolies

In many countries operating a casino or any sort of gambling or betting establishment is just the privilege of the state, and this was achieved thorough false promises.

We shall see the reality with honesty: gambling always existed and it will always exist. There are some fellows who are indeed dangerous for themselves and their families because they are gambling addicts, but they are a minority akin to drunk drivers. You cannot judge just about everyone taking them as a reference, and you should not modify the environment of everybody because of a few.

Nevertheless, many states have virtually monopolised the local gambling market under the pretension that in such a way, somehow, addict gamblers would be better contained. However, statistics seem to show a different picture and just one parameter says it all: there are states that get the most of their money by means of their own casinos, so unless all their citizens were addictive players, the explanation becomes trivial.

Thus, to say that they have monopolised the activity for the sake of public psychological health is pure B.S. Regulation is quite a different matter; it is a necessity for many different industries and gambling is no exception to the rule. Regulating does not mean prohibition but the settlement of more or less reasonable rules to comply with.

Prohibition is just the work of pundits with no practical sense of reality, and since the advent of the Internet and online gambling, both state monopolies as well as prohibitionists are having a harder time trying to prevent adult citizens from choosing where, how and with whom to play.

Ultimately, let's see what state monopolies in gambling have or have not produced: no Las Vegas, anywhere, and that says it all.
