When it comes to electronic aids, a number of them were just introduced to assist the hearing impaired. A total of four conferences were attributed to deafness and this was the last one held. The various devices range from inexpensive and easily installed units which plug into a home's electrical outlets to activate lights when the doorbell or telephone rings to a Telecommunication Device for the Deaf (TDD) which costs several hundred dollars and requires special installation.

Sending and receiving written messages by using a telephone and keyboard is the concept behind the TDD. Using this device required the other person to have a unit as well, emergency aid was not accessible through TDD before, but nowadays a lot of emergency facilities have already been equipped with their own TDDs making it easier for them to provide assistance whenever necessary.

Being deaf means hearing nothing at all and deafness is something that can begin at birth for quite a lot of people. If a person is hearing impaired, he will still have a sense of hearing but this is a weak one. The deaf can benefit from the less expensive devices, like the ones connected to the telephones or doorbells, the other devices were more ideal for the hearing impaired.

With regard to the proximity of emergency vehicles, there is now a device that can inform a motorist about it. The growing trend for emergency vehicles is to come equipped with transmitters that can send signals from 1500 to 1800 feet. When there are surrounding emergency vehicles, a motorist with a receiver will notice a flashing light on his dashboard. This can be helpful even to those with no hearing impairment who may not hear the sirens because they are listening to stereo or have air conditioners on, for example.

One marketing strategy to raise sales for private vehicle receivers was for the manufacturer to give these transmitters to emergency vehicles free of charge. These devices are gaining popularity especially because of the $4 rebate offered for every sold receiver. There was a car maker who wanted a certain quantity of emergency vehicles to come equipped with transmitters, if his number is reached, he will make receivers standard features in every car he makes. The offer included a privilege of being the exclusive party to do the transmitter installations.

Probably the best one yet was the wrist pager that looked like a watch. It vibrates when one of the base stations like doorbell, telephone, bedside call box are activated to call the wearer's attention to a summons. Wearers can distinguish one base station from another because each one has a corresponding indicator on the pager.

Making sounds better for the hearing impaired was simple and a number of devices offered controls for the volume and one of them even came with complete headsets. An inexpensive device for TV use allows a hearing impaired person to raise the volume feed to his headsets from the TV, without altering the main volume feed released by the set, preventing others who hear well from being hassled.

With some of his clients suffering from hearing impediments, a bookstore proprietor started to become interested in the different problems associated with hearing. When he comes by a product that is meant to help people with hearing problems, he would immediately buy it, later on he would present a couple of them to various groups. By using a wired up board, he is able to show how devices are operated. The man does not sell the items he presents, he only provides information on where they could be bought.

It is not as easy for people who can hear well to understand how it is not to hear. Problems start as early as you wake up, no weather report and no idea whether or not your car is running smoothly in a cold day, waking up to the sound of an alarm clock may not even be a possibility.
