The Blog and The Novel: What These Two Literary Art Forms Have in Common

The literary form known as the novel and that of the modern blog have a lot in common. For instance, they have a common origin. Each grew out of the need for people to stay in touch with family and friends. Both blogging and novel writing have evolved into their own art forms. Each has its own commercial aspects, as well.

The novel grew out of the art of letter writing. Women mastered it and perfected it, in part because it was the only form of writing that was socially acceptable for them 200 to 300 years ago. In much the same way blogging has grown out of on-line correspondence. It originally began as a kind of open letter to family and friends which could be shared on-line in a, chronological, interactive format. Many of the first bloggers were women and some of the most successful blogs online are owned by women.

The novel evolved into many different art forms, spawning the short story and eventually taking on many experimental styles. Like the novel, blogging has evolved. It has become a way to express opinions - most notoriously, political opinions.

Both the novel and the blog have commercial aspects. Just as there are the expectations of the publishers and the public that must be met before a novel can be regarded as a success, blogs, too have to meet certain criteria in order to be effective.

Blogging has become an efficient way for businesses to promote a personal-seeming relationship with their customer-base. Blogging is an art. This is true. But, it is also a tool for selling. Thus, it has become one a modern, complex form of the art of copywriting.

With the onset of blogging in the industry, personal journaling became a way for some writers to obtain worldwide fame. Popular blogs have garnered mainstream media attention and created great marketing leverage for bloggers to sell advertising and other products.

Just as there are writers who write for the pleasure of writing, most bloggers still create blogs mostly for personal use and frequently for pleasure. A blog is a place to publish a personal journal to tell of daily adventures, sentiments or whatever ideas the writer wishes to express.

An artful blog combines the personal nature of a traditional blog with business in such a way that the reader doesn't fully realize that they are being marketed to. This is the bloggers gentle art. They speak one on one to the reader adding a strong element of personal persuasion. Bloggers that can achieve resonance with their readers have the opportunity to persuade them to change political views or to purchase a product.

The novel is still a relatively young art form compared to poetry and plays, but it has seen some modern innovations with the latest internet technology - such as the invention of e-books for faster distribution. Blogging is still in its infancy. The full extent of its evolution remains to be seen. But, it has remarkable flexibility. It can already be used for networking, sharing pictures, audio and video. It is hard to imagine what new internet innovations will influence blogging in the near future, but it is certain that more is to come.
