The holiday destination of thousands, from youngsters to those who appreciate the finer things in life, Corfu's history starts in Greek legend, where the sea god Poseidon fell in love with Korkyra and brought her to the island, naming it after her, from which the current name Corfu is derived. Up until the 19th Century when Corfu eventually became part of Greece, the island's position witnessed many a battle and conflict. This turbulent past is visible today as castles occupy most strategic points around Corfu.

Some of these fortifications straddle steep, almost epic, cliffs where exotic vegetation and rare species of wildlife can provide some breathtaking views. You can travel the length of the island in a couple of hours yet it takes on a miniature version of typical colourful and contrasting Mediterranean scenery. Spectacular mountain ranges, busy agricultural areas, and olive groves in hidden valleys all completely and utterly debunk the booze-laden stag weekend perception that has, so unfortunately, been saddled on Corfu for many years.

Corfu always was, is, and hopefully always will be, an island where style and class can take on a new dimension. Almost secret, yet determined to be heard, where the inland lagoons become breeding grounds for migrant birds, where a thousand secret by-ways lead you right in to the history and culture of this incredibly misrepresented island.

It's not as if things have changed, with villas in Corfu being some of the most stylish and luxurious as other accommodation across the Aegean, but that at some point people forgot that Corfu was never a cheap package holiday destination. One feature that surely speaks for itself is the Corfu Trail – an official cross country walking route that winds through the islands ecological districts bringing the island's best features to those taking the route. Some visitors choose to tackle the entire route over a week or fortnight's holiday, while others will yomp along sections, with the entire path almost always remote from the typical tourist resorts. The trail is best visited outside the hottest summer peak period, with the very best of each season either waning or blooming in equal vibrancy.

Corfu's culture is a variety of different influences. The people of Corfu appreciate everything from dance and music to theatre and art, with the capital – also called Corfu – holding a range of cultural and arts events throughout the year. The city's buildings castles, fortifications and an abundance of British designed Neoclassical buildings, while Corfu Town is known throughout Europe for its fine art heritage.

Leisure and sporting activities can take on a new meaning around the island. Corfu's rich culture and beautiful landscape compliment the clear coastal waters, where diving, swimming and boating allow the visitor to gain a different perspective of the island. Restaurants on the island satisfy all kinds of tastes, and like much of Corfu, the quality and styles on offer can satisfy a range of preferences and expectations from the discerning traveller.

Getting to Corfu couldn't be easier, whether you want to fly there, or arrive by sea from mainland Greece. You can be out of the airport or off the ferry and on the beach in minutes. The resorts, culture, and shopping all make breaks on Corfu an perfect place to experience true Mediterranean style.
