With all of the different dog crates available today, it can be difficult deciding on one. More and more trainers are agreed in that they are the best method for housebreaking your dog. Dogs left free to roam the house while you are away at work can cause a lot of trouble. Just ask my 2 year old Lab, Heather. I was sure that she was moving along in her training, so I left her home with our eleven year old Pom one day. We had to buy a new couch after that. The old one was scattered all over the house. A lesson well learned. Don't worry, she has learned now, but it takes time, and dog crates actually make your pet more comfortable, if properly trained to use them.
Story said, there are some things to consider when choosing a crate for your pet. If you have read any of my articles or blog posts, you probably know that I have a few out there related to this. One thing I haven't really given any detail to up to this point is the benefits of folding dog crates. The folding design really offers more benefits to you than your pet. If you need extra room, or like to take it with you, then a folding design is a good idea. Plastic and wire crates offer the best folding designs of any models As of yet, I do not know of any plastic models that fold, but maybe there are, and if not, I am sure that one day there will be. Plastic crates do have other advantages that wire and soft models do not, such as being airline approved.
Folding crates, both the wire and soft sided types, are very easy to set up and take down. Most can be set up or taken down in a matter or seconds with no tools necessary. It makes putting them in the closet, under the bed, or any other location you would like to store them a breeze. It is especially good for traveling in the car. For going to the park, or up in the mountains camping, I prefer taking a soft model that folds easily. I do not recommend soft crates for untrained pets. Your pet needs to be used to the crate. If your pet doesn't like being inside or likes to chew, he or she will probably get out destroying the crate.
Also for traveling in the car, my personal opinion is that a plastic dog crate is the safest place for your pet to be. It isn't safe for your pet to roam freely inside the car, and never a good idea to put him in the bed of a pickup truck. After arriving wherever you are going, then a folding dog crate is great.
Folding dog crates are my favorite for home use, especially the wire ones. It offers a sturdy home for your pet, and plenty of air. On the market are many fancy crate covers, furniture tables, and bumper sets that add to its eye appeal.
To assist you in deciding if a folding dog crate is the best for you and your pet, look at the products offered by the various manufacturers. You are sure to find one perfect for your companion if you do.
