What could possibly be wrong with a diet that rids us of dangerous toxins? Usually these diets consist of naturally occurring foods such as vegetables and plenty of water. A few detox diets are quite strict and only allow juiced veggies and a dash of spice. Celebrities seeking health improvements or needing rehab have often brought media attention to detox and cleanse diets. With all the hype, are such diets safe?.

The correct answer is that it depends on the dieter, their health and their individual situation. In the past some detox diets showed harmful side-effects, especially for people who already had medical ailments.

So what exactly are toxins?. Toxins are chemicals (not only poisons) that are harmful to your body. The body takes in toxins through food and drink, breathing in air pollutants, and also through skin contact from makeup and skin creams etc. All toxins are processed by the kidneys and liver, which eliminate them in the form of sweat, urine and feces.

Some detox diets claim that toxins can build up in the body due to stress and lack of fluids blocking the natural detoxification process. The big supporters of detox diets suggest that it is these excess stored toxins that are the cause of problems such as headaches, allergies, tiredness, and skin complaints.

The idea is that during this time your body will be able to rid itself of the excess toxins. detox diets generally last for a short period of time, and aim to cleanse the body quite quickly. Generally the diets require you to give up most foods and then slowly re-introduce foods as the detox process progresses. Sometimes the diets include colonic irrigation as a means to speed up the detox process.. Some detox diets suggest that herbal teas can help to purify of the blood, and flush out the toxins.

There is a very wide range of detox and cleanse diets on offer. Most diets typically, begin with one or two days of a strict liquid diet. The diet then progresses to a week or two of eating fresh fruit and vegetables. The third stage of the diet is to introduce more food sources including meats (but not red meat), and organic foods (but not wheat).

The number of claims about the health benefits of detoxification diets is endless. Claims include disease prevention and cure, increased energy and the ability to focus and concentrate more. In the end, any diet that is high in fiber and free from junk food will most probably make the dieter feel healthier. Although most reviews of detox diets are positive, it is still your decision whether you think such a diet will safely benefit your health. There is not a lot of scientific evidence to support the claims that detoxification diets work, or that they bring any health benefits.
