Yet ANOTHER week has gone by... and it's time to begin the Declutter Challenge! Wouldn't it be terrific to be able to come home to a clutter-free, tidy, peaceful house? Think about how nice it would be cooking in a kitchen where all your utensils are in their correct places, and where your countertops sparkle and beg to be filled with home made cookies as opposed to clutter? Start yourself on a Decluttering Challenge today! Not sure what a Decluttering Challenge is? It put it simply, it is a challenge you offer yourself (and/or your family and friends) to get a huge part of your home clutter-free in a prespecified time frame. And it WORKS!

The 30 Day Decluttering Challenge

One type of challenge is termed the 30 Day Decluttering Challenge, and the idea is that on each one of the 30 days of the month you declutter one item or section of your house, large or little. The things can range from the bottom drawer in your armoir to your son's old sports equipment in your work shop, from your sock drawer to the stationery collection that gets stuffed in the home office closet. The most important thing is to be reasonable with your task assignment. Writing "put pictures collected the last 3 years into photoalbums" in all probability isn't do-able in one afternoon, but possibly "sort out the pictures into envelopes or piles by the occasion or person and throw out of photos you do not need to keep" COULD be finished!
After your tasks are assigned, think about planning for yourself a reward to look ahead to after your 30 Day Challenge ends victoriously! Yes, having a decluttered home will be a reward in itself, but it's an undeniable truth that we have a tendency to put in more energy if we have something extra to gain from our efforts!

The One Week Decluttering Challenge

A different category of challenge will call for you to assign one whole week to your project. This will be a serious "no one can distract me" week for the duration of which you empty your schedule with the goal of getting back what once wsa your decluttered house. Each day, select one room, close yourself inside it so to speak, and go to town! Garbage bags, bins for donations and re-sell, and certainly some ordinary cleaning supplies will be your necessities. Pull your spouse, your friends, or your kids along with you! Remember, many hands make light work!
Perhaps you will be better off to scale back and give yourself a One Week Playroom Decluttering Challenge, or a One Week Basement Declutter Challenge. No worries! Commit yourself to decluttering for seven days (and really, what is seven days in the scheme of things), and you will certainly bring order back to a big part of your cluttered house!

The 2010 in 2010 Decluttering Challenge

This category of Decluttering Challenge is a popular one. Commit yourself to decluttering (by throwing out, donating, or selling) 2010 things throughout the year 2010. Does that sound like way to much? If you do the math though, it is not as bad as it sounds. 2010 divided into 365 days is merely 5.5 things every day. Look around you... the junk drawer, the cupboard under the stairs, your recroom, the garage... that seems not so unreasonable now, does it? Keep track by ticking it off on the calendar or somewhere handy, and watch the clutter melt away!
Yet one more way one could do the 2010 DeClutter Challenge is to commit 2010 minutes specifically to decluttering! That's 33.5 hours.... Quite a bit until you remember that there are actually 8,760 hours in one year! It is not even one 45 minute session per week! However, 2010 minutes is sufficient to get a LOT clutter-free!

So, the "30 Day Declutter Challenge", the "One Week Decluttering Challenge", and the "2010 in 2010 Declutter Challenge"... three amazing ways to begin decluttering your home! Which challenge will you do?
