Chlamydia is the most frequently reported sexually transmitted disease (STD) in the United States. It is caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis and is transmitted during vaginal, anal or oral sex. Symptoms of Chlamydia will surface between one to three weeks from exposure.

Symptoms of Chlamydia in women can be very mild and can include:

unusual vaginal discharge
burning feeling when urinating
lower abdominal pain
low back discomfort
nausea
fever
pain during intercourse
hemorrhage between menstrual periods.
Men with signs or symptoms might experience:
discharge from the penis
burning feeling while urinating
itching and burning around the opening of the penis
Pain and swelling (less common symptom)
Men or women who practice anal intercourse may acquire Chlamydia of the rectum, which can lead to rectal pain, discharge, or hemorrhage. Chlamydia can infect the throats of men and women who have oral sex with an infected partner.
Complications of untreated Chlamydia

Many persons suffering with Chlamydia are oblivious that they have the illness because they are symptom free. (Three out of four infected women and half of the infected men will have no symptoms). Left untreated, Chlamydia can cause devastating reproductive health problems.

Forty percent of untreated cases in women will lead to the infection moving into the uterus and causing pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). PID causes lasting damage to the reproductive organs and tissues and can lead to pelvic pain, infertility or pregnancy outside the uterus (ectopic pregnancy). Women with Chlamydia are also more likely to contract HIV when exposed.
Complications from Chlamydia are rare in men. The infection can sometimes spread to the epididymis (the tube that carries sperm from the testis), and cause pain, fever and very rarely, sterility.
Diagnosis and treatment:
Chlamydia is detected by a simple urine test. If a person is found to be infected, Chlamydia can be easily treated and cured with antibiotics. The most frequently used treatments are either a single dose of azithromycin or one week of doxycycline (twice daily).
Individuals with Chlamydia should refrain from having sexual intercourse until they and their sex partners have completed treatment, otherwise re-infection is possible. Women are frequently re-infected if their sex partners are not treated.
To help prevent the serious consequences of Chlamydia, annual testing for Chlamydia is recommended for all sexually active persons. All pregnant women should have a screening test for Chlamydia as the infection can be passed to infants during childbirth.
