The United Kingdom is staunchly committed to reducing its vehicle carbon emissions, which currently make up 19% of the UK’s carbon footprint. It has pledged to reduce its new car emissions by 40% of 2007 levels by 2015 and is implementing a number of policies and programs to do so. The most notable of these initiatives is the UK government’s launch of the largest electric car program in the world. Over the next 18 months, over 500 electric car and other low carbon vehicles will take to the road to demonstrate electric cars in real-life settings. Starting in 2011, the government will provide financial incentives for electric cars in the ballpark of £2,000 to £5,000. These include tax rebates for electric cars, along with zero road taxes and free parking. It has also pledged £30 million for the implementation of electric vehicle charging points throughout major metropolitan areas.

UK citizens can hop on board with the UK’s efforts by trading in their old vehicles for an electric car model. There are currently several attractive options to choose from. The most widely available is the Mitsubishi i MiEV, since it is the first electric car to be produced on a mass scale. The I MiEV’s highly-efficient electric motor provides a quieter, sportier drive than is the case for petroleum engines, reaching speeds of up to 130 km/h. It offers an Eco mode feature that allows you to dramatically reduce your power input when maintaining a steady speed. It also has the advantage of recharging itself every time you lift your foot off the accelerator. Boasting a carbon emissions rate of 70% less than a normal petroleum car, fueling an iMiev electric car runs user only 6% the cost of its petroleum counterpart.

The Nissan LEAF is another electric car worthy of your attention. Its front-mounted electric motor delivers over 80 kW of power and 280 Nm of torque, providing instant acceleration and brisk, silent power. The Nissan LEAF is most well-known for its fast-charging battery: it is capable of accepting an 80% charge in less than 30 minutes, or an extra 50 km worth of power in just ten minutes. This electric car comfortably seats five people and can travel over 140km when fully charged. Its distinctive, upright, V-shaped design has the further advantage of reducing wind noise and drag. The Nissan LEAF also includes an advanced IT system which is connected to a global data centre, which provides support, entertainment and information on the closest charging stations.

The Peugeot iOn, to be released at the end of this year, is another electric car to keep your eye on. Developed in partnership with Mitsubishi, the iOn is praised for its compact size, safety and simple operations, which make its performance comparable to a standard combustion engine vehicle. This four seater boasts a battery life of 130 km, 64 horsepower and 180Nm of torque for a top speed of 130 km/h.

The Mitsubishi i MiEV, Nissan LEAF and Peugot iOn are but some of the many electric car options to consider.
