Summer And Winter Breaks On Lanzarote

By: Mark Bartley

Lanzarote is lucky to boast almost every desirable feature required for a great summer break and that's why large numbers of tourists fly to this wonderful island all year round.

Of course weather is going to be near the top of that list and Lanzarote benefits from favourable holiday weather all year round. The sun shines almost every day and rain clouds are normally noticeable by their absence. But weather is just one factor and holiday destinations need to provide more than that to draw in the crowds

Cultural festivals feature on the event calendar all year round from the glitz and glamour of the carnival season earlier in the year to regular local fiestas in the towns and villages across the island at other times of the year. The design heritage seen in other towns and villages on Lanzarote primarily comes from the artist and architect Cesar Manrique, who was born in Arrecife and had such an influence on the development of, not only Lanzarote, but also the other islands in the Canaries. Traffic is largely minimal on the island, so parking is rarely a problem, except on days when a big social event takes place in Arrecife and people from across the island converge on the town. View the newly upgraded Gran Hotel from along the beach with palm trees in the foreground and you could be forgiven for thinking you are in Dubai or one of the best Egyptian beach resorts.

Another of Manrique's creations is the beautiful Jameos del Agua, a unique location that the architect claimed would be the world's most beautiful nightclub. The facility features an inland lake of clear, azure-blue water fed by underground volcanic rock tubes. There is also a museum and a stunning restaurant, all of which create the island's second most popular tourist attraction. While the seasoned clubber might head for the very well known establishments of Ayia Napa and Ibiza, Lanzarote has a choice of smaller venues that host regular events. The resort of Playa Blanca on the south coast has quite a few busy bars and clubs that play live music.

The island has been left which all kinds of volcanic features that create dramatic scenery but perhaps the best is on the west coast where the Timanfaya National Park has over 50 volcanoes and an interesting "hot hole" that will spout steam if water is poured in.

Those who enjoy yachts and boats also appreciate Lanzarote for its choice of marinas, both large and small. On the east coast the compact Puerto Calero marina is a pleasant place to sit and watch the boats come and go. In terms of beaches, Lanzarote has a selection to rank with any world travel hotspot, with the island's Famara beach rated as the one of the top ten in Spain. This is in an area of the island unaffected by large-scale development and is favoured by surfers for its ideal sea conditions.

So Lanzarote is not a place to be forgotten once the summer season starts in mainland Europe. With tourist levels on the increase once more the local authorities seem to be doing the right things to publish the benefits of a holiday in Lanzarote.
