When it comes to male fashion, classic looks always rule, and suits are no different. The suit trends for 2010 take classic looks from the most notable style periods, like the 1930s and 1960s, and give them a modern twist that is more wearable on the modern silhouette.

The super-skinny suit has had its day, but a slim silhouette is still key to keeping on trend. Look for a defined cut that is broad at the shoulders, but slim at the waist. Trousers should also be kept slim, but not skinny and clingy, and anything with a military edge will look current too.

The single-breasted suit is out, and we are now seeing a return to the double-breasted suit. The last time these were around was in the 80s and early 90s, and double-breasted suits in those days tend to be more than a little boxy. The modern double-breasted suit has a slimmer fit, which is much more streamlined - boxy is a big no-no.

One vintage cut, designed for the Duke of Kent, and hence known as the Kent cut, is really making waves right now. A double-breasted style, this ticks all the boxes, with wide shoulders, a trim, slim waist but with the added appeal of longer lapels. These lapels will help to lengthen your shape and will give you added height too.

Lapels are important when you are selecting a modern suit. For over a decade lapels have been kept notched. While this will always look good, if you really want to keep up with the trends then you need to look for a suit with peaked lapels. This is a classic 20s style and helps to create that perfect V shape that we all look for in the perfect suit.

As well as classic vintage cuts making a return, classic vintage fabrics are back too. These are great for livening up a wardrobe that can look predominantly grey, black and navy. Look for anything with a country gent feel - think Harris Tweed, Herringbone, and that ultra-flattering pinstripe finish.

As well as a return to the double-breasted suit, designers look set to breathe new life into the three-piece suit too. A waistcoat is a must this season, but to stay current, choose a waistcoat in the same fabric as your suit. Matching waistcoats are subtler and smarter. Aim to have the V end at the base of your rib cage - the deeper the V, the slimmer your shape.

Buttons are important when you are looking for the right suit fit. As a general rule, the more buttons to a suit, the longer your torso will appear and the taller you will look. However, you do not want to overdo it - you will have to be exceptionally tall to get away with a suit with more than 3 buttons.
