With Christmas just around the corner and the current recession looming over all of us it is becoming increasingly necessary to cut back on the little luxuries and try to save our pennies for a rainy day. However, saving money doesn't have to mean living like a hermit and saving like Scrooge. There are still ways in which you can treat yourself without having to write a formal apology to your bank manager and of course, everything is good for us in moderation.

Whilst re-decorating your house may seem like a momentous task it can quite often be a very therapeutic exercise, giving you the opportunity to get the creative juices flowing and experiment with a fusion of colours, textures and themes. Although completely re-designing your home's interior is likely to set you back a fair amount of time and money there are smaller changes you can make that will alter the appearance and feel of your home whether it be a new set of bed linen or a colourful new rug that won't cost the earth.

Colour can make the world of difference when decorating your home and can dramatically affect the impact that a room has. Large, airy rooms can take darker, more vibrant colours such as reds and pinks whereas smaller rooms, particularly those with a lack of natural sunlight should be decorated in brighter colours such as warming yellow tones. If you can't afford to paint the whole room try using spray paint to revitalise light fixtures and fabric paint on furniture.

It may not be possible to fill every room in your house with brand new furniture given the sheer cost and magnitude of the job but you could buy a few new select pieces that will still give your home a vibrant new look. Choose furnishings in scale with the rooms - slim rockers, open-back chairs or a simple sofa are better for small rooms rather than overpowering furnishings which swallow your space.

Lighting is essential in creating the right atmosphere for your home. To give the impression of more light and space fill your home with glass panels, mirrors and light reflecting surfaces. This will ensure your home feels light and spacious ? even if you live in a studio apartment with one small window.

Always consider who you are planning your home for, If you are decorating a room for a small child make sure you get down to a child's level when designing the lay out and set up. Seeing the room from a child's perspective will ensure that you don't place hooks and similar items too high for them to reach. This is also important when hanging pictures, ensure they are hung at an appropriate height. If you are five feet tall there is little point having a six feet five man hang your art work as it will be too high for you.

To create the illusion of space and reduce the amount of furniture you have imposing into the room choose storage units such as high shelves that can be fixed at head out, out of the way and unique pieces such as hanging baskets to fill with plants and other miscellaneous items.

Key items such as new cushions and rugs will dramatically alter the appearance of your home without breaking the bank. www.modernrugs.co.uk offers a wide selection of rugs from cutting edge contemporary pieces to more traditional designs in a range of colours, materials and fibres. Scatter a few cushions in complementing colours and it will feel like a whole new room.
