Every second week he will be offering professional advice through this column.

Dear Ade Rai
I have enjoyed your column, and now would like to ask you a few questions myself. I have heard that if we stop working out and dieting, all the muscles we have gained will turn into fat. I have been wanting to start a fitness program along with a good nutritional plan. But I am afraid that once I stop, all the efforts of dieting and exercising properly would all be in vain.

- Tyo, Jakarta

Dear Tyo, Thank you for your question. It is biologically impossible for muscle, which is the protein component of human body to be converted into fat, a lipid component. I have always used the analogy of saving money when I discuss fitness, training or dieting. In your case, all the money you have saved, whether in a bank or under a pillow, will never become debt.

We all get caught up with unnecessary fears and spend too much time in doubting the end results. What we should do instead is to believe in our ability to make positive changes in our life, make those changes happen, and keep them for as long as we like.

I am aware this fallacy has kept many people from starting a fitness program. So I hope my answer will once and for all put this fallacy to rest, so you can start conceiving, believing and achieving the health status and body that you deserve.

Hello Ade Rai, What is your opinion on the use of steroids for physical improvement or sports performance? I have friends who upon looking at your photos do not believe you have achieved your physique without the use of performance-enhancing drugs. Some guys I talked to at a local gym even testified that you bought your gear from him.

- Frederick, Jakarta

Hello Frederick, Thank you for coming straight to me for clarification. I used to be irritated by people who accused me of using performance-enhancing drugs. But now I take this opinion as a compliment.

I know it is beyond their realm of knowledge and comprehension that I have achieved my physique with only total adherence to a regimented and drug-free workout and dieting program.

For a long time, man could only dream of flying until the Wright brothers bravely stepped forward with their inspiring invention.

I would not dare to put myself in their league, but I am trying to pinpoint that we are only limited by what our mind conceives as possible. The fact we are the master of our mind tells us we are in total control of how much knowledge we are willing to absorb and that creating a new realm of reality is within our power. We are therefore definitely in total control of what we dare to believe and achieve.

From the beginning of my career as a bodybuilding athlete, I always viewed bodybuilding as the pinnacle of fitness lifestyle.

A strong muscular body should produce health, vitality, vigor and a positive state of mind. The use of performance-enhancing drugs is simply achieving a similar-looking body that risks negating all these qualities.

For me, achieving a shapely physique through honest hard and smart application of fitness knowledge is like working hard and smart to better net worth so as to be considered wealthy, while achieving a shapely physique through the use of performance-enhancing drugs is like borrowing a large sum of money for the same hope (to be considered wealthy).

I have competed at many levels (regional, national and international) for numerous occasions, most of which were drug-tested. The tests ranged from polygraph (lie detector) tests, to urine tests, all within full compliance of International Olympic Committee and World Anti-Doping Agency standards.

I have also been subjected to random drug tests that required me to give my urine samples on the day the order is issued. All the drug tests I have taken have registered negative for performance-enhancing drugs.

I am aware that many drug (steroids) dealers have mentioned my name in an attempt to lure potential buyers.

I have no control over what other people say or want to believe. What I do have control of is my conscience, and I believe I have it intact. At the end of the day, we will all be asked to look at the person in the mirror and be held accountable for our pasts. I look forward to that day.

Hi Ade Rai, I find dieting foods are very limited and will soon find them boring to consume every day. I am wondering what have you included in your meal plans over the past 10 years? Your tips will be sensational in helping me with my food choices. Thank you for taking time to read my question.

- Julia, Jakarta

Hi Julia,
I think you find your food choices limiting because you have been focusing on what not to eat. Now allow me to shift your focus to the food that you can eat. I am going to give you some guidelines on how to pick your food or plan your meal, and yes there will be guidelines on what not to eat. But try looking at the bigger picture and I am sure in no time you will feel the abundance of what is available for you to eat.

Try to resist adding too much oil, cream, margarine, butter, flour, salt or sugar into whatever you cook or mix. You can even eliminate them from your favorite recipes and they will turn out very tongue-friendly.

Even when eliminating frying as a cooking method, steaming, boiling, stir-frying/saut*ing, barbequing, roasting are still available as healthier choices of food preparation.

There are virtually unlimited varieties of vegetables or salads you can make.

There are at least 50 known herbs and spices that you can use to create unlimited combinations of flavoring sensation.

You can still eat your beef, chicken, fish, tofu, egg, tempeh and other protein sources. Just choose leaner cuts and cut out any skin or visible fat.
