Like many other poker variations, Texas Holdem is a card game that not only relies on player’s luck but also player skill. Quick thinking and analytical and some mathematical skill, though not necessary, can very useful in different aspects of the game.

The basic strategy that one must understand in the game concerns the hand that he gets. At the start of each round, the player is dealt with two cards. Players then bet accordingly. The dealer then deals out three cards that serves as community cards that all the players use to build their final hand, the player having the highest hand wins the round.

Since the player is dealt with only two cards, it is somehow easy to determine the possible combinations that can be dealt. Based on the available permutations for a standard 52-card deck, one can make out 1,326 two card combinations. Considering that all suits are equal, one can then count as one all the possible permutations of a given combination made with different suits. These greatly reduces the possible combinations to 169. Because of the limited combinations, one can easily determine the possible final hand that he can get when the community cards are dealt. Community cards also give equal opportunity to all players.

One thing to keep in mind when you receive your cards is that suited cards can be more useful than unsuited ones. Also, you can determine with relative ease the probability of the hand you are trying to come up with, based on the cards still available on the deck, which can be done by card counting. Many of various poker strategies can also be applied to the game of Texas holdem.
Texas holdem is the most common version of poker to be used in poker tournaments around the world and online. A greater deal of strategy is needed when participating in such tournaments than that of casual play. At this point, betting strategies become even more useful. The idea here is chip management.

The most critical aspect in staying in tournament poker is the amount of chips left to a player on each round. Various tournament rules determine the amount that a player needs to have left to continue playing to the next round. Chip amount also determines the positioning of the players and thus, the proportion of their winnings. This also needs to be taken into consideration in planning your strategy for the tournament. The idea is to control the amount of your bets, not betting to much to lose your chips but winning a fairly large amount to stay on top of the standings.
