James sat at the back seat of the family car with his mother and baby sister. In the front passenger seat was his older brother John. His father was driving the car. They were all on the way to the airport to send John off to Australia for further studies.

It was already dark at 7.30 p.m., but the powerful headlights of the car lit up the road clearly. They were making good time for they had half and hour to travel the fifteen kilometres to the airport. John was to check in at 8.00 p.m.

Suddenly without warning, raindrops splattered down onto the windscreen. Soon it rained cats and dogs. James' father switched on the windscreen wiper to full speed but the rain was so heavy that visibility was reduced to only a few meters. They had to slow down and could only plod along carefully at 50km/h. It was quite a strain to travel in such adverse conditions. James could see the consternation in his father's face as he glanced at his watch ever so often while driving. James realized that they might be late to the airport.

As they passed by Sky building and the marble arch that marked the boundary between Asala and Kumalong, it was already 7.45 p.m. The traffic stopped completely as they neared the Hilton. Frustration mounted. James' father swore softly. James could see that John was restless. Everybody looked at his or her watch, except Joanie. The little baby did not know how to read a watch yet. She was obviously to the tension in the car and was happily looking at the lights along the road through the misty veil of the pouring rain.

Fortunately the car has an air-conditioner so the windows did not mist up, but the engine was definitely being strained. James could see the temperature gauge of the car rising slowly and surely toward the red line. He prayed that the engine would not overheat.

Five to eight, and they had only moved a few meters from their last position. Obviously they were not going to reach the airport by 8 p.m. James' father thumped the wheel impatiently, muttering curses under his breath. His mother said that there was nothing that they could do except wait and hope that the traffic cleared soon. His father relaxed a bit.

They crawled meter by meter forward. Gradually they saw the reason for the traffic jam. Though the white mist of rain James could see a motorcycle on its side on the road. A badly damaged car was parked beside it. What a terrible accident it must have been. But they had no time to dally about. They had to make the airport as soon as possible.

Once clear of the scene of the accident, the car picked up speed, but they could not go very fast for the rain had not let up. Through what seemed to be an eternity they finally came within sight of the well-lit airport. James' father steered into the 'departure' lane but was again caught in another traffic jam. About a hundred meters from the check-in counter, the car came to a halt. There was no way to get to the counter in a hurry. James saw that it was already 8.40 p.m. Goodness, they were really late.

In desperation John jumped out of the car and asked James to help him carry the luggage to the counter by foot. Everyone alighted to help except James' father. He had to follow the traffic and park the car somewhere.

James helped his brother John get the luggage to the counter. When they reached there, only one clerk was present. All the other passengers had checked in and the clerk was about to close the counter. The airplane was due to take off in fifteen minutes time. The other passengers were already boarding. John just made it.

Immediately after checking in, John was asked to board the airplane. He kissed everybody goodbye except his father. The poor man was probably still stuck in the traffic jam. Anyway delay was impossible and John had to board the plane without saying goodbye to his father. His mother promised to do it for him.

With a wave of his hand, John disappeared into departure lounge. Their race against time was over.
