Stop Snoring Naturally: Eight Tips to Use Tonight!

There are many reasons why people snore. Usually snoring is caused by some obstruction in the airways. Technically, snoring is a vibration in the throat caused when a person breathes while asleep.

Snoring can be the result of a medical condition, such as swollen tonsils and adenoids or a misshapen wall separating the nasal cavity, called a deviated nasal septum. There can also be a growth in the nasal cavity called a nasal polyp. Extra tissue or weak muscles in the throat can cause snoring. These medical conditions cause blockages in the airways. Colds and other infections which make drawing air through blocked nasal passages more difficult is another cause of snoring. Finally, consumption of alcohol or some types of medications before bedtime may overly relax muscles in the throat and this relaxation may increase a person's chances of snoring.

An estimated 45% of Americans occasionally snore and 25% or more do it every time they sleep. Some people snore in a quiet and unnoticeable way that does not affect their life at all, but others snore so heavily that it is a serious issue that can cause stress in a family. Most snoring is about 60 decibels which may be like the sound of a normal spoken conversation while bad snoring averages 80 decibels which is more like medium yelling. Snoring can disturb others and have a very dramatic affect on everyone around a person who snores. Like a crying baby, snorers can wake themselves and other sleepers every half hour. This causes sleep depravation and emotional stress for those in a snorers immediate vacinity. Snorers themselves suffer the same sleep depravation by waking themselves up or being woken up by their bed companions. In the end, the people who sleep with or near a snorer may carry a lot of tension while trying to sleep. This tension can lead to back and shoulder problems, teeth grinding and other related issues.

Sites like WebMD, report that snorers can be at risk for serious health problems. Chronic snorers may actually be suffering from an illness called Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). OSA has several common symptoms including: long interuptions of breathing, episodes of total blockage of airway passages, frequent waking from sleep, light sleep, and lowered blood oxygen levels which makes blood pressure rise. Not everyone who snores has sleep apnea, but people who have sleep apnea typically do snore loudly and frequently.

Snoring is usually associated with many negative health problems and is basically a nuisance, yet KABC-TV in Los Angeles, CA recently reported that a new study by the Montefiore Medical Center in New York has found that snoring has some benefits. Instead of finding that snoring is detrimental to good health, research done at MMC found that people who snore may sleep less during the night and burn more calories during the day contributing to lowering weight. Additionally, the Times of India also reported on an Israeli study of 600 people over the age of 65. The Israeli study claims that the risk of early death in people with moderate sleep apnea was less than half that of people with no history of snoring. The study found that early death for those with a severe form of sleep apnea was the same as a healthy control group. Israeli researchers theorize that the pauses in breathing may actually strengthen the heart and brain. Those people who have this condition may be better able to handle a heart attack or stroke because their bodies are accustomed to the pauses in oxygen and blood supply to their organs.

While there may be some new found benefits to snoring, most people want to find a way to stop. Even if they do not experience breathing pauses and other serious symptoms, snoring can still be a problem for them as well as for their entire families. The increased breathing effort associated with snoring can impair sleep quality and lead to many of the same health consequences as sleep apnea.

So what can a snorer do? Stop snoring treatments are widespread. Some are cheap and others very expensive. The vast majority of sufferers can stop snoring by treating the underlying causes of blockages in the airways. Treating chronic congestion and refraining from alcohol or sedatives before sleeping can help a lot. In some adults, snoring can be relieved by dental appliances that reposition the soft tissues in the mouth. Although numerous over-the-counter nasal strips and sprays claim to relieve snoring, no scientific evidence supports those claims. Excess body weight leading to an enlarged neck and excess soft tissue in the trachea can contribute to snoring, so losing weight may help, too. There are also several surgical alternatives but trying the simpler remedies first may relieve
most of the problem.

Have you have had enough of being woken up every half hour either to the sound of your own snoring or by your partner asking you to "roll over?" Are you having trouble getting a good nights rest because your partner snores so loudly?

These eight tips may help you reduce problematic snoring:

1) Relax before bed - try not to worry about whether or not you will be able to sleep without snoring, avoid drinking caffeine or alcohol before bedtime since caffeine can keep you awake and alcohol can cause you to wake up during the night. How about a hot milky drink instead?

2) Try not to nap in the afternoon or early evening. Instead take a walk in the late afternoon or early evening. Make sure you finish exercising at least three hours before bedtime.

3) Keep a regular sleeping pattern (Do not confuse your body clock by drastically varying your bedtimes).

4) Wear an eyemask or earplugs to help block out noise and light.

5) Take a look at what you're eating and drinking. You could have an intolerance to certain foods which affects your breathing, especially when lying on your back.

6) Sleep on your side or front.

7) Use nasal strips. Nasal strips help open the air passages, thus removing or preventing blockages. If your desperate, it is worth a try, but nasal strips can be expensive.

8) Treat nighttime reflux by avoiding eating after 8PM.
Sometimes an antacid taken before bedtime may help.
