The benefits of kicking bad, unhealthy habits will be achieved, and felt, more quickly if these habits are replaced by new, healthy habits. The risk of developing a serious illness through disease and unwanted weight gain is much higher in smokers and those with lifestyles that are less active or include unhealthy eating habits. Some people may believe that the idea of giving up smoking or watching less television in order to adopt a more active lifestyle is simply too difficult. But, many actually find that as soon as they feel the benefits of changing their habits for healthier ones, the prospect is not that daunting at all and is actually enjoyable. It is never too early or too late to develop the habits of healthy living.

Food is a means of sustenance but many have made it a central focus in their lives. The prevalence of diseases such as Cardiovascular diseases and cancer in resent times is directly related to the over consumption of both salt and sugar in people's diets. The good news is that this is a trend that is relatively easy to change. We can achieve a healthy body in a short amount of time by swapping fatty and high sugar content foods with more whole grains, fruit and vegetables. If the change in diet is accompanied with some form of healthy weight loss this will also reduce the chances of developing some chronic diseases.

We can also make great leaps to a healthier lifestyle by being more careful about the food we eat, in other areas, not just by controlling our salt and sugar intake. It is also important to consider the other substances that might go into the foods we put in our bodies. This also includes being aware of what potentially hazardous chemicals may be present on the food, such as, pesticides and plant hormones that are often used in modern farming techniques. Foods that are closer to their original state often contain less of these chemicals and still provide the same amount of nutrition.

Exercise is also a critical aspect of healthy living. Daily exercise, to some people, might sound too difficult to achieve, but the truth of the matter is that it is a lot easier than most people expect. There are many options available in a regular workout program, from a leisurely stroll around the block after dinner to a consistent exercise program that gradually increases in intensity. 30 minutes of aerobic exercise on most days of the week, is a good target to try to achieve. By adding some resistance training exercises a few times a week, an effective exercise program will be achieved, leading to an all round healthier body.

A healthier lifestyle also requires us to receive regular medical checkups. By diagnosing medical conditions in the early stages, they are a lot more easier to treat. The frequency that medical screenings are needed varies depending on the patient?s age and general health. Family doctors are a good place to ask on how often and where to get any medical examinations done. By seeing a local doctor at least once a year you can easily keep a watchful eye on your health and get advice on other screenings that they think are necessary.

Healthy living starts with a few good lifestyle choices. A longer, healthier life is easily achievable if you take the time to improve your diet and gradually build up a weekly exercise routine. The benefits of eating a healthier choice of food and kicking those unhealthy habits will be a more fulfilling life ahead and the opportunity for a longer, happier one too.
