The leaves are just beginning to turn and the winter holiday season still seems distant. The routine of back to school activities like homework, mid-terms, sports practices, and football games is engulfing you again. With the exception of college preparation, you have not yet thought about the following spring. You may be wondering why anyone would be thinking about next spring's prom dress.

Most prom-goers are unaware of the fact that the best selection is available before the new year begins. Most prom dress manufacturers ship dresses in early October, for the following spring season. Dress buyers often purchase in-fashion prom attire before winter advertisements appear in the magazines of your local grocery store. How is it possible to find these new styles when they're not even featured in magazines yet? People look on the internet. Most internet prom dress retailers add the new spring styles for dresses to their websites in October, just as soon as the photos are available from the manufacturer.

You may say, "My prom is not until May! Won't shopping in March be sufficient?" If you are not too particular about your dress, the answer is yes. If you're picky, you shouldn't wait. Waiting will cause you to be disappointed, especially if you want a popular, specific style. Many of the most popular styles of dresses are either completely gone, or on backorder until May or later, by as early as the end of January or the middle of February.

Why would they be completely sold out already? Prom dresses are seasonal items, and only a certain number of each style are made. Prom dress manufacturers typically cut a certain number of dresses in the late summer for the following spring Prom season, and will begin delivering their dresses to stores in October. Through February or March, they re-cut the dresses which have received the most early orders. However, by that time, orders for these re-cut, highly-demand styles are already placed by customers at the stores. At that point, no more prom dresses are made by the manufacturers. This is because they are reluctant to have stockpiles of unsold inventory gathering dust in a warehouse during the slow summer months. If a style is going to be held over for fall homecoming, it may available again, but not until summer or fall.

The more popular prom dresses could also be sold out, or on back order, very early because of winter formals in December, January, and February. Because the dresses are already in the stores, they're bought for these events. In addition, the principal American Prom dress manufacturers are not limited to just the United States in dress sales, rather all over the world. Also, there are many online sellers of prom dresses that ship them world-wide. Competition is definitely high for the more popular dresses, on a global level! Thus, another reason for early proms is the shopping.

In some parts of the country, proms may be held as early as February. Not all proms are held in the same two or three months of the spring. Your prom may occur in April, but many, many others happen much earlier. Prom dates have been seen as early as mid-December! It amazes us to see shoppers in April carrying December-published prom magazines, oblivious as to why we don't have "their" dress.

If you are not particular about a style or color, you can wait until March to buy your dress for the prom. However if you want a specific style you will have to start shopping as early as November/December. Start browsing online in October if you are not exactly sure what style you want, it may help give you an idea. If you find the dress of your dreams, don't procrastinate. Buy it!
