Williams is an ex - pro basketball player. He was an NBA first-round option in the 1994 NBA draft, in spite of his pre-existing heart condition, and a small forward for the University of Notre Dame. After playing his freshman year at Notre Dame, he had been forced to miss 2 seasons following the prognosis of this condition. From 1994 to 2003, he played 9 NBA seasons. He's competed in 456 games and landed a total of 2,884 points. He was forced into retirement by long-term knee problems. His coaching career began in 2005 when he was hired as an assistant coach for the Portland Trail Blazers.

New Orleans missed the playoffs this previous season for the first time in three years. With Williams at the helm, they're likely to be better this impending season. Previous season the Hornets were just 17th in the league in points per game at 100.2. That number has to get better if New Orleans is to contend next season and cover the odds at the offshore sports book. The defense was more of a frustration. The Hornets slipped to 21st in the league, allowing 102.7 points per game. New Orleans had been known previously as a challenging defensive squad but that wasn't the case previous season. Williams should have the ability to get better those numbers. New Orleans was led in scoring previous season by David West who averaged 19 points per game. Paul led the squad in assists at 10.7 per game while Emeka Okafor led the squad in rebounding.
