When buying spill control products you will frequently be purchasing spill kits which contain a range of solutions, including spillage specific absorbents and spill control products designed to minimise the spread of any spillage as well as speeding up the absorption, whilst protecting people and nearby equipment if necessary.

Spill control products are either specific to a particular type of spillage, such as oil, water, hazardous chemicals or bodily fluids, or may be general purpose absorbents designed to deal with a wide range of spillage incidents and hazards. But spill kits will often be used in ways which results in a depletion of one or more elements, and this can result in having a spill control solution which is unable to be used to deal with a hazard effectively, or having spill kits which need replacing whenever one or more elements becomes used.

However, there is a solution to improve the efficiency and cost effectiveness of using spill kits, and this relies upon using spill control products provided by the more reputable manufacturers of safety equipment. In these case, spill kit refills are available which can significantly increase the financial affordability of having a spill control solution over the longer term.

In most cases the spill kit refills will be designed to represent the kind of restocking required by most companies and businesses, meaning that you can start to look at long term spill control solutions, and not just short term products which may seem economical at the time, but which become very costly over the longer term. To some extent it depends upon how often, and how severe any particular spillage is likely to be within the workplace.

In some workshops a daily spillage control procedure is required where heavy machinery may require the substantial use of oils, or which may result in the running off of oils, and in some factories cutting tools may require a continual surplus of cutting oils to be dealt with to minimize any build up which could become hazardous. The law requires businesses to make sure that any spillage involving hazardous chemicals or oil of any kind, whether accidental or anticipated is dealt with quickly and effectively in a way which will ensure that not only are employees safe at all times, but that there can be no likelihood of the spillage leaking into the ground, where it may reach the water table and begin contaminating local water supplies.

It is essential therefore to make sure that at all times your spill control solutions are appropriate to the maximum possible risk which can be foreseen. Having spill kits which have been partially used, but not replaced or refilled may mean that should a spillage occur, you are unable to deal with it fully and effectively. Spill kit refills are able to significantly increase your ability to make sure that all spill control solutions on site are kept fully stocked and ready for use in the case of any spillage. But spill kit refills are not always available from every manufacturer.

For this reason it is important that when looking to purchase a spill control solution, don’t just look at the spill kits available, at the range, the cost, and the contents. Whilst these are all important considerations, it should be just as important to check to see whether the spill kits are complemented with a wide range of spill kit refills appropriate to the style, type and capacity of spill control solution you are looking to purchase. By making sure that your spill kit refills are available in a wide range of capacities it means that you can afford to be more flexible when it comes to choosing the spill kits and spill control products themselves.

Whilst you may need to have a spill control solution which can deal with a large scale high capacity spillage, it may be just as likely that you may need to deal with relatively minor, small scale spillages from time to time. Stocking your business sonly with the high end, large capacity spill kits may mean that incorrect materials are used for dealing with minor spillages, rather than breaking into an expensive high capacity spill kit, or that the large capacity spill kit is used, rendering it unusable again, and wasting a costly investment.

Instead, by buying a range of spill control solutions ranging in size from small scale to the largest capacity possible, and by making sure that each of the spill kits can be maintained through the purchasing of spill kit refills, you can be assured that your spill control solutions will be affordable, practical and more easily maintained regardless of any spillage incidents, either minor or significant.
