Speed Dating Questions to Ask

Speed dating is a popular and fun way to meet new potential dates. It's a change from the typical bar scene so many people in the dating world are accustomed to, and may feel a bit more safe and reasonable than online dating for those who are still skeptical of meeting someone over the internet.
However, unlike email and sitting at a bar and striking up conversation at your leisure, speed dating gives you a time limit of 5 to 10 minutes in which you're allowed to meet someone and ask questions about what you'd like to know about them. Because of this time limit, your first impression is all you have to hit or miss a chance with someone. The way you dress and the questions you ask (as well as how you answer their questions) are the most important things to consider before taking a dive into the pond.
First, there are a few basic questions you can ask to get an idea of his or her background and the type of person they are.
What do you do for work?
Where are you from/where do you currently live?
Do you smoke or drink?
Do you practice any religion?
What are your views on politics?
What do you believe is your biggest accomplishment so far?
Some questions may be too personal for some people to answer right away, and that is understandable. It is important to know someone's religion or political views if there is any potential for a long term relationship, but some may prefer to bring personal information like this up once you're on a date spending more alone time together.
Questions about relationships and what they are looking for in a partner are also important. If you're not looking for the same thing, it may be difficult to make a relationship work.
How long was your last relationship and why did it end?
Do you believe in love at first sight?
Do you ever want to get married?
Do you want or have children?
Is sexual compatibility important to you?
How do you feel about sex before marriage?
On a less serious note, find out their personal interests and hobbies to get ideas of whether or not you'd have fun spending time with this person. Questions like this are also good for lightening the mood and lowering your chances of sitting and having a drawn out, uncomfortable and awkward conversation. This could lead to you find out you both love Chuck Palahniuk novels and playing disc golf, and before you know it you have a date planned.
What are your hobbies?
What are your favorite movies/TV shows?
What is the last book you read?
What is your favorite genre of music?
Would you rather spend an evening at home or out and about?
Do you enjoy outdoor activities more in the summer or winter?
If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
An easy way to lighten the mood if the situation is uncomfortable or feels awkward is to act creative, silly questions that are fun to think about but still help you get to know the person better.
Would you rather know your future or change your past?
What is one item you always need in your refrigerator?
If you could be any animal, what would you be?
If you could spend a day in anyone's shoes, who would it be?
What is your favorite holiday?
You only have six months left to live. What 3 things would you want to accomplish?
Aside from focusing on what questions to ask, remember that you will also have to be prepared to ask questions, and you never know what they're going to ask. Before diving in, have an idea of what information you're comfortable giving someone.
One of the most important things to remember is to go in feeling confident. Dress however makes you feel the most "you" and however you feel most comfortable. If you hate wearing heels and would never wear them anywhere other than a formal ball, don't wear heels. If you have a tie you love that really brings out your eyes and makes you feel most attractive, wear it.
Whatever you do, remember that a positive attitude is key in a situation like this. It will help you deal with the unexpected and decide just what to ask and how to answer questions. It will also help you stay open-minded, and with that being held, the possibilities are endless.
