When reading the directions on how to build a fence you really need to realize how critical the pre-planning part is. It is probably the most important part of the whole thing when deciding to build your first fence. Directions on how to build a fence are easily found on-line but , before you start digging your first fencepost hole, there are quite a few things you will need to consider. You can’t just start digging holes and building without some careful thought and preparation.

Most communities today will require you to obtain a building permit before starting your project. Also if you live in an area with a home owners association you will need their permission as well. Do not even attempt to start building without a quality set of plans. If you do not have a precise set of plans you won’t know how much material you need or how much it will cost you. The last thing you want to do is run out of material before you finish and not have enough money to purchase more.

You will also need to find out how deep the frost line is in your area; your local building supply store can help you with that. Once you find out how deep the frost line is you must make sure that you dig your holes well below this line so your fence posts won’t heave up when the ground freezes. While I am talking about fence posts it is crucial that each and every posthole be evenly spaced and perfectly aligned with each other or your finished fence will look terrible.

You need to follow the directions on how to build a fence that will come with any quality set of plans. You should start by digging the holes for the end posts first. Allow the concrete to set for at least 24 hours then stretch a string very tightly from one to the other. By doing this you will create a perfectly straight line from one post to the other. Then, according to your plans, drive a steak at 6 or 8 foot spacing along this string. You must measure carefully so all your posts will be equally spaced and will look good when you are finished.

Dig all the required holes and carefully align all the posts with the string. Use a level and make sure that every post is vertical and aligned. Once they are aligned and vertical they will need to be braced while the concrete sets up. This will take at least a couple days and while you are waiting you can cut the cross pieces and boards to the proper length. To avoid costly mistakes, make sure that you consult your plans before cutting any material. It is also a very good idea to use wood screws instead of nails to build a fence. Sometimes, if you use nails and hammer against the posts, it can work them loose and they will no longer be vertical.

When your fence is complete it is important to finish it with a good quality seal, stain or exterior paint so it will last for many years. It is critical that you obtain a quality set of directions on how to build a fence so your fencing project will look professional and will stand up to years of abuse from Mother Nature.
