The Water is Not Hot

First, remove its upper thermostat cover plate and study the high limit control button. If it has tripped, simply press the control button to reset the thermostat. You could also check the input terminals for power. This is located at the upper thermostat. You can see that it is marked with L2 and L2. if the power is out, then have a look at the wirings or the circuit breakers to your water heater.

Also, take note that if the water does not warm up, the upper thermostat should supply power in the upper heating element. So, look for power at the upper heating element. And if you do notice a voltage at the heating element but your heating element still fails from getting hot; then, the heating element really needs to be changed.

Meanwhile, if the power is gone in the upper heating element; then, it is the upper thermostat that needs to be changed.

The water is extremely hot

The trouble in this situation lies on one of the thermostats. So check for voltage above the heating element. If power is functioning above the heating element, then your top thermostat might be damaged. If the power is functioning in the lower heating element, then the problem lies on the lower thermostat.

It is also possible that your thermostats aren't tightly pressed against the tank.

The Water is Not That Warm

The lower thermostat could be defective. So in this case, the lower part of the tank will not be heated so the supply of hot water would be radically lessen. And it is possible also that either the upper or the lower thermostat is faulty. You can note that, when one of these do not have power. Just in case the problem lies here, your only option is to replace the damaged part.

The electric water heater could smell bad once bacteria showed a response with the magnesium anode rod, which often results akin to nasty egg aroma. For you to avoid this, you must clean the tank using chlorine bleach or using aluminum as an alternative to anode rod.
