Wilbur Wright was born on a farm near Millville, Indiana on April 16, 1867. His younger brother, Orville was born four years later in Dayton, Ohio on August 17, 1871. The Wright brothers were like twins. They had this same interests; they played, worked, and planned together. Bu they were also different. Wilbur worked slowly, was quiet, and very serious. Orville worked fast and liked to talk and to joke.

Wilbur and Orville were both good students, especially ir math, but they were best at fixing and making things. They mad the finest kites in Dayton, and that was the beginning of their interest in flying.Orville built a printing press with Wilbur's help, and the} published their own newspaper, the West Side News. But the} couldn't compete with the other Dayton newspapers. Then the} started to repair bicycles. Soon they were making and selling their own bikes at the Wright Cycle Company. But more and more, Wilbur and Orville were talking, reading, and dreaming about one thing flying. They spent hours observing birds in flight and reading everything they could find about flying.

Their next step was to build and experiment with gliders, aircraft that fly on wind currents. They built a glider in the back of their bicycle shop and, in the summer of 1900, shipped it to the small fishing village of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina to test. They chose Kitty Hawk because it had steady winds, no trees, and miles of soft sand to land on. For three summers, they tested and improved their gliders.

Then in Dalton, in 1903, the Wright brothers built an airplane firth a motor and two propellers. In the fall, they returned to Kitty Hawk. And on December 17, 1903, Orville became the first person in history to fly an airplane. They called the plane Flyer 1. Orville flew it for 12 seconds and went 120 feet. They made three more flights that day. On the last one, Wilbur flew for 59 seconds and went 852 feet. Five people watched their flights, but only a few newspapers reported them.

In the next two years, the Wright brothers built and flew new planes and greatly improved them. They tested them in a cow pasture near Dalton. But many people didn't believe these flights ever took place, and it wasn't until 1908 that they showed the world they could fly. In May of that year, Wilbur sailed to France to demonstrate their new Type A Flyer. Between August 1908 and January 1909, he flew over 100 flights near Le Mans, France. The lights were a great success, and thousands of people came from all aver Europe to see them. In September of 1908, Orville went to Fort Myer, Virginia, where he successfully demonstrated the Type ? Flyer to the U. S. Army. The Wright brothers had finally Droved their claims, and the Age of Flight had begun.

Men have always wanted to fly like birds. Birds can fly easily because they are light, but men's bodies are heavier. Men first went up into the air in balloons. These are big bags, and they are filled with gas. Hydrogen is a useful gas for balloons. it is lighter than air. Helium is also lighter than air, but it costs a lot of money. So balloons were (and are) usually filled with hydrogen.
