Many elderly people refuse to schedule dental visits because they do not want to deal with the uncaring treatment they have received in the past. Although everyone bemoans the rising costs of dental care and prevention, that reason did not place first in a recent poll of why people do not go to their dentist. When asked, 'Why are you not making or keeping dental appointments?' elderly people responded that the disdain with which they were regarded in the office kept them home. When it comes to the attitude and dental hygiene of the older population, there have been many studies undertaken.

Typically, many aging individuals simply wish to be heard, and respected enough to be told politely what they can expect from their treatment plan. These two points are essential in providing proper dental care to seniors. In order to provide the best health care possible, this requires the dental industry as a whole to modify its views of older patients.

Most elderly people could easily share a disheartening tale of a trip for dental care. One such story concerns an older woman whose mouth was filling with blood during a tooth extraction, and was told by her dentist to simply swallow it. She became so scared, she refused and left the office. As a result she had to get dentures.

It doesn't matter how old a patient is - every patient needs to be made comfortable when visiting the dentist. Communication is everything and older patients are more trusting and comfortable with dentists who will take the time to properly communicate with them.

A thorough explanation of what procedure is going to be performed is very important to seniors. Sometimes it can feel to them that others are doing things behind their back, as they see doctors and dentists more regularly now who typically can't or won't provide them with reasonable information. And as deeply personal as oral care is, our seniors simply want to be helped in understanding.

Many patients who are advanced in years will not seek out a dentist until they are in pain. These visits often uncover more serious underlying dental issues that could have been taken care of before they got out of hand. Education and awareness is the key to rectifying the situation.

Of course, older folk are not the only "targets" of disgruntled dentists that have been exposed by recent studies. You can extrapolate this information to apply to people from all generations, from any background, no matter where they live. Research clearly indicates that every single dental patient demands at least some level of respect from their "caregiver," and are sadly NOT receiving it to their satisfaction.

It is for THIS MAIN REASON that people everywhere, and of all ages, are FAR LESS LIKELY to see a dentists until they are in EXTREME AGONY! In order to increase a patient's attendance at regular check-ups, the relationship between the patient and the dentist must be considered and improved. Every dentist should be conscious of how they treat their patients.

The dental community as a whole must be willing to work on creating positive dental health messages. Citizens from all walks of life, as well as local governments and business owners should take it upon themselves to forward the education. You may wish to discuss how important dental health is with the use of ads, or invite local dentists to speak at area schools.

It is very important that people understand that their oral health can and will affect their overall health. We should emphasize the importance of dental care becoming as regular as check ups at the doctor's office. This message would be especially compelling to those seniors who hope to remain active for a long time yet to come.

Demonstrating they have had good dental care, it is gratifying to see an elderly person proud of their teeth. Happy that she hasn't lost many, she owes it all to finding a dentist that treats her right. This is why it is so important that the dental profession as a whole remember that making patients feel comfortable is as important as the dental procedures themselves.
