A great source of irritation for many computer owners is having a computer that slows down over time or runs poorly. Besides that high aggravation level, a slow computer can reduce your productivity levels and waste a lot of your time. Bringing a smile back to you face can be done by doing a few easy things that can help fix a slow computer.

Defragging

One of the ways you can fix a slow computer is by defragmenting your hard drive. Your computers ability to arrange data on your hard drive in a unbroken sequence gets worse with age. Files are spread out on the hard drive causing the disk head to have to move more in order to retrieve all the data. The increased movement of the head results in a slower computer.

Windows comes with its own Disk Defragmenter tool. To run the defragment tool begin at the Start Menu, click on Programs (or All Programs), choose Accessories and finally System Tools. Locate the Disk Defragmenter tool and select it. The program will begin and you can start the defragmentation procedure.

It may take a while for this procedure to computer and it may slow down your computer while it is running. You may want to start this process at night before going to bed or when you are not intent on using the computer as it may take some time to complete.

Get Rid Of Temporary Files

Not everyone realizes that the temporary files on your computer can actually slow it down. Hard drive space can be freed up by deleting temporary files which can fix a slow computer. The Disk Cleanup tool that comes with Windows can be used to delete temporary files. To run the tool begin at the Start Menu, click on Programs (or All Programs), choose Accessories and finally System Tools. Locate the Disk Cleanup Tool and select it. Run the program after you have selected the drive you want to clean up, in most cases this is drive "c". Just follow the instructions on the screen to delete the temporary files.

Remove Programs You Do Not Use

You can free up more hard drive space by removing any useless applications. Go to the Control Panel and use the Add or Remove Programs tool (in Windows Vista this is under Programs and Features) and remove the applications you no longer use. If you are undecided about an application it may be best to leave it on rather than remove something your system might need.

Registry Clean Up

The Windows registry is a file (a database to be exact) that contains information about settings on your computer. These consist of hardware settings, options for the operating system, application settings and user settings.

The registry is the final item to look at and you can get free applications online to scan it for any problems. Correcting registry errors can help fix a slow computer as well as helping with freezing or crashing programs and many other operating system related errors. These applications can help determine the necessary steps in order to help improve the stability and speed of your computer.
