The Federal waters have opened up and the Destin Fishing Rodeo is going ahead as planned.

The 62 year old competition had to go ahead and the oil spill could not put a damper on a competition that is competed in by hundreds of fisherman from across the country.

Helen Donaldson, executive director of the month long fishing tournament said, "There will be a tournament." But added, that they didn't know what type of fish would be available due to the oil spill explosion.

Captain Ken Bolden of Destin Charter Boat "Just B Cause" claimed that the fishing is great and he has taken out many trips since the federal fishing ban had been lifted and they have all been successful.

He said, "Shark fishing is great. In the last three trips we caught a total of 27 sharks, which is a great number."
He also observed, "The fishing patterns seem to be the same as usual despite the oils spill. The fish are plentiful and are still great to eat."

Captain Ken was also relatively happy with the season opening up and starting fishing again. He said he had been busy with charter fishing trips being booked by new customers and they have all had a good time.
Competition for charter boats has declined as some captains are not putting their boats out and instead waiting for a BP pay out. Although the number of people calling about charter fishing trips has declined in the Destin area, it looks promising for the next couple of months and the next year.

People are finally putting the bad news of the oil spill behind them and getting their annual fishing trips in when they can. Bookings should be good in August and September, then the month of October welcomes the Destin Fishing Rodeo.

Tim Brood, a board member for the Destin Fishing Rodeo said, We have to do the Rodeo... It's been a part of Destin's history for 61 straight years, and we're not going to regress. We're not going to let some silly little oil spill ruin our history.

It seems it's good news for once this summer on the gulf. Destin, who's beaches were relatively untouched by the oil still has beautiful sandy beaches and people are returning to them now that the press has died down with the ongoing oil spill reports.

The waters are still clear and the fishing is great, which still makes Destin the "Luckiest Fishing Village in the World."
