Have you ever picked up a phone to call a complete stranger and were paralyzed in doing so because you were afraid of being rejected in some manner?

Do you absolutely dread, not dislike, but dread calling someone in the middle of the day at work?

Do the words cold call make you sweat profusely?

Have you ever written down word for word what you would say to a business person over the phone and then verbally recite in during the conversation?

Have you ever dialed the phone a dozen times except for the very last number, only to hang up and redo it again in a few minutes?

Have you ever looked at the clock and said, "I'll make the call at exactly 5 or 10 after the hour because you didn't want to make the call at all?

Have you ever worried that you wouldn't sound right in a small group meeting?
Have you ever spent time worrying about what a complete stranger on the other end of the phone would think if you asked for something they didn't have?

Have you ever worried that you would be bothering someone on the phone if you called right now?

Have you ever rehearsed your words in your head only for them to come out jumbled in a meeting?

Have you ever avoided parties because you didn't want to interact and mingle with complete strangers?

Do you consider phone sales as the worst job in the world to have?

Well, with the exception of the final question, (because many people would hate telephone sales for a career), you may be suffering from a little known, but widespread psychological disorder called social anxiety (I know, it's not a real eye catching name but to some extent we have all succumbed to its powers). Of course there are other symptoms that accompany this social disorder as well, but the telephone is my personal social anxiety disorder that I struggle with daily. In fact, to go even farther, I'd rather drive an hour to talk to someone I barely know for five minutes than to call that person over the phone.

Social anxiety comes in many forms and not everyone who has this disorder has all aspects of it. In my example above (which, by the way, is true), I do not have a fear of interaction with another face to face (though, I still think sales would not be an ideal career for me) I am not fearful of traveling the distance to see someone face to face. Don't ask me why, but it's just that way. Others have a fear of going to parties because of the small talk they need to engage in while there.

But like any human condition, you and I can (and should) overcome and totally lick this nasty business called social anxiety disorder. It first must be understood but it can be won, but you and I can do that very thing. It doesn't need to be a lifelong abnormality. You would be surprised at just how many people experience these kinds of social anxiety symptoms in the course of a single day
