Would jumping into the middle of a lake without knowing how to swim be a good idea?

Would you buy a car without knowing how to drive?

C'mon, in all honesty most people would have to answer NO! Why then, would you purchase a gym membership without knowing how to exercise?

The truth is, people are willing to invest time, and money into learning what they feel is vital or necessary, yet when it comes to learning how to exercise, they look at personal training as an unnecessary expense.

Let us look at the main reasons people join a gym.

1. Lose a few pounds
2. Get stronger
3. Get leaner
4. Become healthier
5. Keep their independence

I trust you would agree that each of these reasons is very important...especially if it is your reason! Yet, many people purchase gym memberships all the time without knowing the first thing about how to exercise, believing that walking on a treadmill or hitting strength machines a few days a week is going to get them in shape.

The truth is; without proper guidance, most people will struggle along for a a month or two and with not much to show for their efforts, they give up and stop coming. This is quite often the case over a number of years and regardless of your commitment it always ends the same way with you being frustrated and even more out of shape.

If you want to avoid that scenario, ask yourself these questions.

1. Are you happy with your progress?

2. Do you have time to waste, trying to figure out what works or does not work?

3. Do you know what exercises are best for you?

4. Are the exercises being done with proper form?

5. Do you know how to work around injuries or how to avoid them in the first place?

6. Are you self-motivated and disciplined enough to stay committed to your routine?

7. Do you have enough experience to change your routine every month?

8. Do you know what sets, reps, and intensity mean, and how they affect your results?

9. Are you knowledgable enough in nutrition to achieve your weight loss goals?

If you can honestly, answer yes to each of those questions then I would like to interview you for a personal trainer's position. If you answered no to one or more questions, you are among the majority of exercisers who would benefit from hiring a personal trainer.

Of course, many people say, "personal training is too expensive"...is it really?

Quite honestly, it it all comes down to what's important to you. Naturally, better health and fitness is important, otherwise you would not have invested in a gym membership in the first place. And with statistics being as they are, whereas 75% of all exercisers quit within 3-months or struggle day after day without noticing any measurable results, maybe a small investment in personal training is not such a bad idea after all.

Think about this...

For the price of a cup of coffee each day, you could have a personal trainer to work with you once each month. Your session would include a customized exercise program tailored to your specific needs and goals along with one-on-one instruction to ensure that you have correct form and are working out at the proper intensity for optimal results.

Moreover, working with a trainer helps to hold you responsible for your progress on a regular basis. This helps keep you focused on achieving your goals and motivated to succeed.

Realize too, that personal training doesn't have to be a long term commitment. While some people meet with a trainer weekly, others find that once or twice a month or even once every 2-months is sufficient to keep them moving in the right direction--it's completely your call.

One thing for sure; if you are currently not getting the results you expected, are not sure how to begin, or are having trouble staying motivated, most anyone can afford to spill a cup of coffee now and then ;)

Lastly, when figuring out whether personal training is worth the price, think about how much it costs you when you fail--you not only wasted the cost of your membership; you have also wasted a great deal of your time as well.
