Should You Buy a Used Lift Chair?

Many senior citizens have difficulty standing up from their favorite recliner. If you or one of your loved ones experiences this, maybe you should consider switching to a lift chair. A lift chair is just like a recliner, except it has mechanical "legs" that slowly and delicately lifts the chair up at an angle so the user can stand up. Basically, a lift chair is a chair that stands you up at the push of a button. Having a lift chair will benefit you by offering you better mobility, comfort, and a higher amount of independence.
Lift chairs are more expensive than ordinary recliners, and there are features that you wouldn't want to be without that drive up the cost even more. For this reason, many people would consider a used lift chair in order to save money. I would discourage this decision. Even a used lift chair would be a large investment, and it's very possible that the seller is just trying to get rid of it because it doesn't work properly. Most authorized distributors, on the other hand, offer a warrantee that will guarantee the lift chair for at least one year. They also usually offer home installation and service, whereas an individual seller would probably leave it up to you to arrange the shipping and moving of the lift chair. This is a good place to point out that lift chairs are very heavy, and require two people to move. So, ordering from an authorized dealer that agrees to set up the lift chair in your home for you is much more convenient.
If you were to buy a used lift chair, which would not supported by its manufacturer or seller, it would be nearly impossible to have serviced if it ever needed repair. The mechanical structure of these chairs is complex and uncommon for ordinary technicians. In fact, the servicemen who work for the manufacturers and retailers are the only people who know how to fix them. You wouldn't want to spend your lift chair allotment on a substandard, unsupported product that may let you down. It is better to come up with enough money to adequately satisfy your needs over time as well as right now in the present.
So, if you plan to shop for a lift chair for yourself or your loved one, be sure you know what to expect for the price you want to pay. It is true that some lift chairs sell brand new for as low as $400, but a comfortable two- or three-position recliner would be significantly more expensive. If you buy a lift chair, that means you're certainly planning to spend time sitting in it, so be sure to get one that fits your needs.
