Should Marijuana be Illegal

I was surfing the Internet this week and came across some remarkable articles in Digg and reddit that related to a site Criminal Justice University. The blog on the site had a couple of articles that made it to the upcoming sections on Digg and reddit that talked about corruption information for the U.S. versus the World. I found it exciting and so I began reading the comments on the article and came across a easy one that said legalize cannabis. So some idiotic being had the idea that all of the nation’s crime troubles would go away if we just decriminalized marijuana. Well, that was plainly a stretch, but it started me thinking about why marijuana is unlawful and simply led me to the statement that it must be banned for a reason. So I decided to do some study to see if I could get to the base of this somehow.

As some further background information, I want to disclose upfront that I have by no means used marijuana nor do I think I ever will. This is a personal preference on my part and to the best of my abilities I will try to keep that private slant completely out of this article. If it sneaks in and by chance a comment comes my way along the lines of don’t knock it until you try it, etc. Well… I just don’t want it to go there. Enough said on that, so let’s begin with a bit of research. I assumed that marijuana is illegal as it has some awful effects on the body so let’s start with that impression.

So I ran the subsequent search in Google “marijuana effects on the body” of course it had millions of hits. The first is an article from doitnow.org http://doitnow.org. It is located at http://www.doitnow.org/pages/126.html and is an interesting read if you get a chance. It does a quite decent job of laying out a few basic effects that marijuana has on the body like the following:

· Marijuana is a complex drug in that it consists of 400 different chemical components. This makes it a challenge to establish the effects in might have on any particular individual (so effects will vary).

· THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol) enters the bloodstream and sets up group taking somewhere from 3-5 days to depart to several weeks. The impact of this staying power though is clearly unknown.

· Pot’s universal effects contain an increase in heart rate as much as 50% quicker than normal, which can cause problems.

· Pot causes an increase in hunger “the munchies”.

· There is as well a probable risk of lung cancer although no direct connection has been recognized.

· Pot also causes a short-term plummet in hormone production and causes lower sperm counts in men and throws off women’s menstrual cycles.

· Pots effect on the brain basically remains a unknown according to this article

Okay, so based upon this first evaluation, it’s not crystal clear why marijuana is illegal (at least as it relates to the effects on the body). It surely has some negative side effects, but so do a bunch of other recreational drugs (alcohol, cigarettes, etc.). So let’s keep searching for a better answer as to why marijuana is illegitimate.

The next article in our search results from Google is “As a Matter of Fact… MARIJUANA” located here: http://www.well.com/user/woa/fspot.htm. So let’s see what it says about the effects of marijuana. So several of the side effects of using marijuana include:

· A faster heartbeat and pulse rate

· Bloodshot eyes

· A parched mouth and throat

· Causes a reduced capability to concentrate, short-term memory loss and sluggish response times.

I’ll skip to the end of this particular piece and tell you that it doesn’t in fact provide any new information. It definitely does not clearly build the case for why marijuana should remain banned based on the effects on the body. So this went on for a couple of hours and honestly, I in no way saw anything new in regards to the effects that marijuana has on the body. Thus it is safe to say that the evidence is lacking to justify it being illegal on the basis of what it does to your body.

My next notion was along the lines of what is the impact on the user’s mind. Though, I quickly realized that in fact every one of the other articles I had read answered that query as well. It basically is either unknown or varies depending upon who you believe. In a large amount cases it actually seemed like the effects were no worse than having a couple of beers. So, let’s skip that theory as well.

In fact, I swiftly started to grow to be skeptical of the fact that marijuana is prohibited for a reason, as I could reasonably argue against just about all argument. For example, my next notion is that it is illegal due to the fact that so many crimes are committed around the production and distribution of marijuana. Though, it seems very likely to me though that this is caused since it is forced underground. If it were not illegal, you would likely see less violence around it. A different case is that the strength of the marijuana is unknown and that could be dangerous. Well, much like moonshine. If it is grown and produced underground that is the case except if it was legal and subjected to government standards you could know and control the strength of the marijuana (just like we do today with commercial beers, etc.).
So this leads me to the conclusion of the article and frankly a deduction that I hoped to not find to be true. I can’t see any reasonable reason why marijuana is illegal but alcohol is legal. Alas, I cannot find a good reason why marijuana is illegal. I hope somebody else can find one. As for now, I will continue to refrain and can with a bit of luck persuade my family members to do the same. That decision though is completely separate from my attitude regarding whether it should be legal or illegal.
